Cheers, <<First Name>>!

In 2005, Dr. Cliff Arnall came up with a formula that concluded that the third Monday in January is the saddest day in the year.

The idea was that a miraculous one-day depression would be caused by an after-Christmas financial debt and a feeling of guilt for not sticking to New Year resolutions. But neuroscientists debunked the idea of Blue Monday, and the psychologist even came up with an apology four years ago.

However, this notion of the most depressing day of the year, when the winter environment and our low motivational levels start having a negative effect on our mental health, has stuck on. And this is without adding a pandemic into Dr. Arnall’s controversial equation.

While our low mood can truly be affected by seasons, the good news is that we can fight the gloomy feelings. Studies have confirmed that looking forward to future events can be helpful, which means that planning your next vacation is a remedy, <<First Name>>! Did you choose any from my last week’s article on top destinations for 2022?

When I reflect on winter blues, I cannot help but think about thermal baths as a panacea, a cure for all things! So in this mail on Monday I prescribe you the following steaming medicines:

1. I’ve just published a guide through the best jjimjilbangs in Seoul! These very special bathhouses open 24/7 are ideal places to reinvigorate one’s body and soul. If you don’t know much about this famous Asian culture, you can read more about it in the Korean spa introduction guide!

2. My favorite thermal destination in the vicinity of my home is Rudas Baths in Budapest, Hungary. Together with some other Hungarian thermal baths, it was recently featured in The Yogi Wanderer’s guide through the 18 best thermal baths & hot springs in Europe.

3. The lesser-known Doho Hot Springs, which I wrote about in my article on the best Ethiopian lodges, also gained additional press coverage. KnycksJourneying included it among the top 20 hot springs in the world! Check if you can find your own favorite!

Human civilization in Asia, Europe, and Africa, has been aware for centuries that our planet has the ability to heal, both itself, and us. We just need to allow ourselves, and our environment – a break.

Responding to my earlier e-mail on cleaning our cluttered mailing lists, one reader wrote to me: “Cleansing is an integral part of any real health action (scientific or religious), so if a person does it with the body, then mental hygiene is even more important.”

I couldn’t agree more! What’s your take on creating a healthier self? Are you planning some traveling as a remedy? I would love to know!

Before saying bye, I wanted to share an amazing project of the Bowerbird Collective with you. You might have heard about it already, as the “Songs of Disappearance”, a music album entirely made of sounds of endangered Australian birds, arrived at the top of the charts, leaving even Taylor Swift behind.

With that soundtrack, I wish you a bluesless week!
