NIPPERS START BACK 29TH JANUARY
|

I hope all our Nipper families had a lovely festive season and the new year has been kind to you.
We ended 2021 with our Christmas Nippers and everyone was excited to see Santa arrive in the IRB with lollies for all Nippers.
Nippers recommences on Saturday 29th January at 3:00pm.
Due to the current situation with COVID, I will be implementing a revised COVID Safe Plan in accordance with state government and Life Saving Victoria requirements. The main changes are returning to density limits of 20 Nippers per group and1.5 metre distance between age groups.
Please keep an eye out for Team App notifications for the set up/pack down and BBQ duty roster...we can't run a Nipper program without you!

STARFISH NIPPERS: SEE YOU 22 JANUARY!

Happy new year wishes to everyone! I hope you had a wonderful holiday with family and friends.
A massive congratulations to Charlie and Marie, who successfully attained their Surf Rescue Certificate just before Christmas. I have had the pleasure of patrolling with both of them since then! I am so very proud of you both. Also to Josh (SRC) and Graeme (Bronze Medallion)—fabulous members of the Starfish team. Massive thanks to Zoe Murdoch, Jas Lawrence and team for facilitating the fabulous program.
We are excited to be starting again this weekend— Saturday, 22 January, 2:45pm for a 3pm start. As Kirsten mentioned, there are some revised COVID-related requirements to assist keeping everyone as safe as possible. You should have recieved an email with all the details—please check your inbox.
Our new equipment has arrived—very exciting! Looking forward to enjoying and stretching our skills and experiences a little further.
Stay tuned for the launch of Starfish Video we have been working on with Benzen Video Productions! Very exciting indeed. The video shows the magic that happens on the beach at Hampton to encourage other clubs to start a program and families to join their local club.

GREEN PATROL, NEIGHBOURHOOD CLEAN-UP AND SPECIAL GUESTS
|
|
12th-13th February will be our inaugural Green Patrol, with opportunities for all families!
- Saturday: The Marine Mammal Foundation will make a presentation during Nippers.
- Saturday and Sunday: Clean Up Australia litter challenge. Collect litter in your neighbourhood with your family. Bring the bagged rubbish to the club before Nippers on Saturday or during the patrol on Sunday (12-6). We'll put it all together to demonstrate how great an impact we can have when we work together!
Life Saving Victoria and Bayside groups will be on hand to help share the learning and get more clubs involved in this sustainability initiative!

CELEBRATE AUSTRALIA DAY AT THE CLUB!
|
|
|
Members and their families are warmly invited to celebrate Australia Day at the club. This has become a tradition over the last several years for many members, with some informal and fun events on the water and beach, the essential game of cricket and a BYO BBQ/lunch.
At 12.30pm we assemble for the Hampton LSC Australia Day Swim & Paddle (all abilities and family members invited—there will be water safety). This is a great opportunity for less-confident swimmers to have a go at swimming to the pole (depending on conditions) and those who want to stretch can cover part or all of the 1500m pole-to-pole-to-pole swim.
Following the swim/paddle, the annual cricket match will commence and members can enjoy their lunch or BBQ.

Thanks to the fantastic work everyone has done during this difficult time. We were hoping this season would be different, but unfortunately not.
Just a quick reminder of our covid diligence on patrol:
- We have reduced patrol sizes to the core team or a maximum of 6
- Please ensure masks are worn at all times in the club
- All equipment used must be cleaned prior to being put back in the club
- Ensure we up hold a positive public image by following the CHO orders and social distancing (especially while under the patrol tent)
On a more positive note, keep an eye out on Team App and emails from Jas. We have an IRB course coming up, and plans for ART, FA, SMBM and a Bronze course over winter. If you are interested in any awards please reach out so we can keep you in the loop.

MIA ON COMPETING AT THE SUPER SURF LEAGUE
|
|
|
I have just arrived home from competing at the Super Surf League in Bondi this morning! This competition went for three days, consisting of three sprints, two relays and flags every day, where athletes are selected to compete for their state in the ultimate battle to gain the most points.
I am so grateful for being picked to represent Victoria at this interstate competition. I have been so lucky, as this series does not just provide the opportunity to race against the best in Australia and the world, but teaches hard work, mental strength and, most of all, the rewards associated with being an athlete.
The amazing friends I have made and the overwhelming experience gained through these comps are things I will be forever grateful for.
For me, personally, this competition was not about the tangible results, but more experience and learning valuable lessons to be ready for nationals later in the year.
I was so happy with my results —placing top 5 in the majority of my events —and the opportunity to meet new people. Overall, I just enjoyed the experience I was so lucky to have been given by Life Saving Victoria. |

It was with great sadness we said goodbye to Anne Henry. Anne was a beloved member of the Hampton family, a long-serving competition squad parent, having been an age group manager for over a decade across three different groups with children Luke, Daniel and Caitlyn. She was on the HLSC Board as Director of Finance for two years and assisted tirelessly with various Club and Nipper duties.
Anne will be remembered as an amazing athlete, having completed the Hawaii Ironman only five years ago. People will also remember her fondly as a strong, kind and generous person who went out of her way to help people.
Although Anne’s declining health meant she couldn’t be with us this season, her spirit of volunteerism is still evident through the contributions of her family, with all three children coaching Nippers each Saturday and Grant’s continued support with beach management and water safety.
Our thoughts are with Anne’s family, husband Grant and children Luke, Daniel and Caitlyn.

Betty Macaulay, life member and past president of Hampton LSC, was a member of HLSC for many decades and leaves a lasting legacy. The historical photos in the upstairs club room show Betty in Hampton competition uniform in 1952, plus the RLR team from 1956-57-58. She also donated the framed march past uniform that is on display.
Betty was married to Roy Macaulay who became a long-term president of HLSC. She served many roles within the club including the committee, competition squad and swim instructor. Legend has it that Betty was ruthless instructing reel and line drill, as well as the march past team!
In 1985 her husband Roy passed away at a lifesaving carnival and at the request of numerous club members, Betty became the first female president of HLSC. After her retirement from active service, Betty maintained her keen interest in the club, attending the life members' afternoon tea each year. More recently Betty was a key panelist during the inaugural Hampton Pink Patrol, which she enjoyed immensely.The Hampton surfboat is named Betty in her honour, something that seems even more fitting now than ever.
Betty is survived by her son Geoff and we convey our condolences to Geoff and his family.

Who: Anyone age 12 or 13 on the camp dates
Sign up for this great opportunity to develop their interpersonal skills and broaden your understanding of lifesaving, working with outstanding volunteer leader mentors and likeminded lifesavers from across the state. See the draft program here. At this weekend camp, you can:
- Develop confidence, communication and teamwork skills
- Improve lifesaving skills and be inspired to stay involved in lifesaving through a variety of pathways

LET’S WORK TOGETHER FOR A SAFE AND FUN SUMMER!

I hope you all had an enjoyable Christmas/New Year break. Thanks to all HLSC members who gave up their time over the festive season to patrol our beach and maintain a safe environment for all visitors.
As you will be aware, COVID-19 is out there in our community and we will keep a watching brief on this situation. We should still enjoy the beach and club activities but remember to keep the risk as low as possible, following covid-safe protocols at all times. Most importantly, if you feel unwell, please stay home. If you are a patroller, simply let Jesse know and we will organise a replacement. My best advice is to communicate with us so we are all on the same page!
On another note, in February we will be running an inaugural Green Patrol to highlight the importance of ocean and beach conservation. See Carol's note above for more details, including a Clean Up Australia event. We will also be running another Pink Patrol in February to recognise female volunteers in the lifesaving movement. Stay tuned for updates.
