Neighbourhood Watch in
Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby

eNewsletter #536 - 18 January 2022

This weekly eNewsletter is compiled by Neighbourhood Watch volunteers as a service for residents in Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby council areas. The eNewsletter is a new type of Neighbourhood Watch; utilising the available technology to keep people more connected and up-to-date with local crime and safety issues.

The eNewsletter includes a selection of posts from our local police at the Ku-ring-gai PAC Facebook page (also known as 'eyewatch'), primarily for those not familiar with Facebook. We add anything interesting from a Neighbourhood Watch point-of-view - this could be a local newspaper article, a roadwork warning, crime prevention tip(s), an upcoming Neighbourhood Watch meeting, Q&As from residents, or an item from another Police command ("Crooks know no boundaries!").

🚓 Have you seen anything we should share with the community?
Please email our NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby volunteers. We do value your contributions and thank you for your support.

12 January, from The Hills command: Robbery and Serious Crime Squad detectives have charged a man as part of ongoing investigations into a spate of alleged car jackings, and armed robberies committed at gunpoint in Sydney’s north-west at the weekend.
Investigators from the State Crime Command’s Robbery and Serious Crime Squad – assisted by officers from The Hills Police Area Command – established Strike Force Bellinger to investigate a number of motor vehicle thefts and assaults which occurred in the early hours of Saturday 8 January 2022. They include;
  • • About 3.15am, two males armed with handguns approached a man and woman – aged 58 and 59 – travelling inside a black BMW 640i as they drove into the driveway of a West Pennant Hills home. It’s alleged the males demanded the keys to the vehicle before smashing the passenger’s side window and stealing a handbag, then fleeing in a black Lexus sedan.
  • • About 3.35am, a 37-year-old man was approached by two males and threatened with a firearm, then assaulted, as he exited a service station on Windsor Road at Northmead. It’s alleged one of the males then fled in a white Hyundai, while the second male left the scene in the man’s black Range Rover Evoque.
  • • About 3.50am, a 36-year-old man had stopped his white Hyundai on the side of Prospect Highway, Blacktown, when two vehicles approached his car and stopped; preventing him from driving off. Police have been told two males – armed with a machete and handgun – then forced the man into one of their vehicles, as a third male stole the Hyundai. It’s alleged the duo then made a range of demands for cash and other property, before he was eventually released near Girraween.
Crime scenes were established at multiple locations and several items were seized by investigators – including the stolen Lexus and Range Rover – which were located abandoned later that day and have since undergone forensic examination. Following extensive inquiries, strike force investigators arrested a 24-year-old man on O’Connor Street in Lithgow just before 2pm yesterday (Tuesday 11 January 2022). With assistance from local police, a search warrant was then executed at a Mount Wilson address, where investigators located and seized clothing and other items, which will undergo further forensic examination. The man was taken to Lithgow Police Station and has since been charged with destroy property in company use fire, three counts of robbery while armed with dangerous weapon and take/detain person in company with intent to obtain advantage. The Mount Wilson man was refused bail to appear at Lithgow Local Court today (Wednesday 12 January 2022). Investigations under Strike Force Bellinger continue.

Anyone with information that may assist Strike Force Bellinger investigators is urged to contact
Crime Stoppers: 1800 333 000 or https://nsw.crimestoppers.com.au. Information is treated in strict confidence.

LAST WEEK'S QUIZ - 11 January, from Ku-ring-gai command

Answer: The blue car gives way to the yellow car, which is already on the roundabout.
Road rules: Roundabouts: "When you approach a roundabout, you must slow down or stop to give way to all vehicles already in the roundabout. This means giving way to vehicles already in the roundabout on your right, and vehicles that have entered the roundabout from your left or from directly opposite you."

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH KU-RING-GAI AND HORNSBY
Mr MATT KEAN (Hornsby—Treasurer, and Minister for Energy and Environment)—Today I would like to acknowledge the work of the Neighbourhood Watch Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby. With the recent Sydney lockdown impacting and isolating many in our community they came up with a way for us all to help our neighbours. The Neighbour Card, an idea of Thornleigh resident Peter Heggie, is a way for people to easily reach out and offer assistance to those doing it tough in our community. It is simple idea. Just download the card from the Neighbourhood watch website, print and fill in your details and what help you can provide. It could be something simple like watering the plants, picking up the shopping or bringing out the bins each week. The cards can then be dropped into letterboxes in your local area. This is a wonderful way for locals to pay it forward and I would like to congratulate the Neighbourhood Watch Ku-ring-gai and Hornsby on this initiative. I hope many take it up and help continue to foster a strong sense of community throughout Hornsby.

16 January, shared with permission from the Pymble and West Pymble Community group: Scam warning
I’m currently selling a drum kit on marketplace and Gumtree. Someone contacted me via WhatsApp saying they saw my ad on Gumtree. They asked some questions about the drums and then said they wanted to buy them and would transfer the money via Australia Post, and then once I have the money they would have a courier collect the drums. They sent a link to the Auspost payment thing. I immediately thought he’s a scammer and googled his phone number and name and sure enough he is. I thought it worth sharing.

16 January, shared with permission from the Warrawee Valley & Surrounds Community group yesterday (Saturday): Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know my bag / wallet was stolen from my car a few nights ago (followed by an online shopping spree which I was thankfully able to stop by locking all my cards!)
When police visited our property they mentioned there was quite a bit of theft in the area. Chatting to our neighbours, a similar incident occurred this time last year nearby. Anyway, just a reminder to lock all doors and be vigilant! Take care.

From NHW in Ku-ring-gai & Hornsby: 'Our 20 Favourite Crime Prevention Tips for Pedestrians
  • Tip #12: PLEASE DON’T RACE THE TIMERS! Pedestrian countdown timers have replaced the flashing red man at some intersections in NSW.
  • Tip#13: RESPECT CHILDREN’S CROSSINGS, sometimes helped by lollipop men/women. Take extra care looking for little feet behind and under cars, rolling balls, children running with over-balancing backpacks, etc. Children can be difficult to see and may act unpredictably. Children under 8yrs should hold a parent’s hand when crossing a road, or in a carpark. See also  http://www.kidsafensw.org/road-safety/pedestrian-safety/
  • Tip#14: PLEASE DO NOT CLIMB OVER FENCING, if pedestrian fencing is in place to direct pedestrians to better crossing points.
  • Tip#15: REFUGE ISLANDS ARE NOT PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS. Please do not treat them as such. They are to help you cross the road in two stages, when traffic is busy or the road is wide. A driver should not stop for you at these islands.
