Reading Activities

Talking While You Read

When you read together, talk with your child about the book. Talking develops your child’s vocabulary and understanding of the book. Choose a book that your child enjoys. First, read the entire book to your child, then read the book again, stop and talk throughout the book using PEER.

Letter Sound Dominoes

Being able to identify sounds in a word allows children to break apart words in order to read and write correctly. Children learn sounds through talking with you, singing with you, or even reading a poem with you!

Change My Word

Blending is when students are able to put sounds together in order to read a word. Children need to know letter sounds first before they can read. Try this activity to help with learning new sounds.

Often, Lakeisha wished she had more books with children who looked like her, talked like her, and whose lives mirrored hers. As a speech-language pathologist, Dr. Johnson found that books are the perfect anchor to foster strong language skills. Maya’s Book Nook is the merging of two of her passions.
