Recognizing Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is an opportunity for us all to plan, act, and reflect.

For this purpose, NCSS adapted the Community of Practice Developmental Framework (Ball Foundation, 2010), an iterative cycle in which planning, acting, and reflecting leads to action within practice.
  1. Plan: In previous weeks’ News & Views we asked you to share what your plans were for honoring MLK’s legacy and commitment to social justice.
II & III. In today’s News & Views we will focus on action and reflection- while many of you may have used yesterday’s official holiday to reflect and act, this is an opportunity to continue to be intentional in the ways we plan, act, and reflect.
II: Action

In 1994, Congress passed the King Holiday and Service Act, designating the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service. Taking place each year on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is the only federal holiday observed as such.

The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a “Beloved Community.”

Members of the START Network said they planned to recognize MLK day in a variety of ways ranging from personal commitments to donating to volunteering to attending a local march and celebration.
“I will continue to remind myself that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and others before me advocated for each and every opportunity that I have in all areas in my life. I will continue to hold my head high and be proud of being a black woman despite oppression and social injustices that continue to occur. I will continue to lead by example so people can see that they too can strive to be great, do great things, and be the best version of themselves.”

II: Reflection

The START Network Reflects on MLK Day….
"Martin Luther King Day has become more than a day off to me as I have become an adult. When I was younger, my parents made sure we attended an event in the community to honor this day. I passed this along to my son... As a child every year, I would watch a movie called, "Little Boy King." It is a movie that reflects Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life until his untimely death. Now I try to watch other movies that are related to historical black lives and reflect on how grateful I am for the bravery of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and so many others who spoke or displayed acts that negated the social injustices that have occurred throughout the years against black people. Lastly, the infamous "I Have a Dream" speech has become more and more inspirational to me as I continue to have an opportunity to grow by age and as person each year."
"Here are three of my favorite quotes - they highlight that we must be active, not passive, in our work for racial equity."
"The time is always right to do what is right."
"Change does not roll in on the wheels of inevitability, but comes through continuous struggle."
"Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a better person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in."
"MLK represents love, compassion, acceptance – wholeness"
May MLK Day be the catalyst for renewed energy in the fight for racial equity.
