HISTORY FOR everyone.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Mass production of Valentine’s Day cards began around the turn of the 20th century. An endearing corniness has become part of the fun shared among schoolchildren and adults exchanging cards with family and friends. Trademarks from North Dakota's Past
North Dakota History, Vol. 57, No. 4, Fall 1990

In the mid-1800s, factory-made packaged merchandise began to replace locally produced goods sold from bulk containers, leading to a great increase in the use of trademarks. In October 1892, the first trademark registered in North Dakota was by cigar maker Sanford D. Frank of Grand Forks. The cigar, named Frank's Star, boasted the trademark of "a star shaped figure printed in gold bronze color on cigar."

The World of S.D. Nelson: A New Collection Inspires an Upcoming Exhibit

A recent donation by S.D. Nelson revolves around the art of storytelling. Nelson, an award-winning writer and illustrator, has produced a series of 12 children’s books and collaborated on seven additional books. He is a registered member of the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and a descendant of the Hunkpapa Lakota. All Is Grass and Clouds, Forever: The Art of S.D. Preserving A Significant Portrait

Our Audience Engagement & Museum curators recently finished a new project in their efforts to preserve and protect the state’s museum collection of more than 80,000 artifacts. We completed restoration of a 140-year-old oil painting of Linda Warfel Slaughter (1843–1911), an early changemaker in Bismarck and the great-grandmother of Gov. Doug Burgum.

The Midwest Art Conservation Center in Minneapolis completed the work, and we love the results.

U.S. Forest Service Collections Cared For by State Historical Society

The State Historical Society of North Dakota has an agreement with the U.S. Forest Service-Dakota Prairie Grasslands to preserve and curate archaeological objects and specimens. Some examples include chipped stone tools, Native American ceramics, fire-cracked rocks, animal bones, historic period artifacts such as Euro-American glass and metal as well as charcoal and soil samples. Many of the U.S. Forest Service collections were cataloged over 20 years ago and need to be rehabilitated, cataloged, and digitized. State Historical Society collections assistants are cataloging and digitizing the collections and records and integrating them into searchable digital records.

Learn About Fort Mandan Overlook State Historic Site

Fort Mandan Overlook State Historic Site is located just above the section of river bottom where Lewis and Clark established their winter headquarters in 1804-1805. Original remains of Fort Mandan have not been found and may have eroded long ago due to the meandering of the nearby Missouri River, leaving the fort’s exact footprint subject to speculation.

Archaeological excavations of the overlook site have revealed that people lived at this location during the late 1700s to mid-1800s and earlier was a Plains Village campsite from around A.D. 1300 to 1400. Interestingly, more is known about the prehistoric Plains Village campsite than the later occupation.

Learn more about Fort Mandan Overlook State Historic Site. Nearby, tours of a full-scale replica of Fort Mandan are available year-round at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan State Historic Site in Washburn.
