Happy New Year! Hope this reaches you all safe and well, as we all start another unusual year. The Ocean Discovery League has several exciting updates and upcoming events that we're eager to share.
The Global Deep Sea Capacity Assessment is now closed with 360 survey submissions from 124 countries and territories around the world! Our Capacity Assessment team is now fervently analyzing the data and preparing the report, which we plan to release in late February. Learn more about our incredible Research Assistants below and join us for a workshop on February 24 at Ocean Sciences 2022.
FathomNet, an open-source underwater image database for training, testing, and validating state-of-the-art artificial intelligence algorithms, is now available! Learn more about FathomNet at one of our upcoming events in March and April.
ODL is now collaborating with Dr. Beth Orcutt and her team on the 2022 Deep Sea Expedition Planning Master Class, part of the NSF-funded Crustal Ocean Biosphere Research Accelerator (COBRA) project. This training course will run through the spring and will make open-access materials on deep-sea expedition planning available this summer.

Exhibit Launch: Australian National Maritime Museum
A new exhibit inspired by Dan Novy and Tyler Schoeppner's MIT Media Lab Open Ocean work with 11th Hour Racing is now on display at the Australian National Maritime Museum! Marine life revealed by Schmidt Ocean Institute's 2020 circumnavigation of Australia aboard their research vessel Falkor is viewed through 3D visualizations of five extraordinary deep-sea specimens. It's our hope that these immersive, reflective light field displays can engage the public in new ways.

Article: Frontiers in Marine Science: Pathways to Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in Marine Science and Conservation
The Society for Conservation Biology-Marine Section (SCB Marine) organized a JEDI focus group at the Sixth International Marine Conservation Congress (IMCC6). Several barriers to just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive conservation science and practice were identified. In this brief, they explore these barriers, assess how they limit progress in marine conservation research and practice, and seek to identify initiatives for improvements.
