In November we launched our Animal Photojournalism Fellowship and received 49 applications from incredibly talented photojournalists from around the world. The caliber of proposals and portfolios was inspiring and we aim to work with many of these applicants this year and next.

After thoughtful deliberation we are so happy to announce that Seb Alex will be our first Animal Photojournalism Fellow! With his extraordinary eye he has been photographing farmed animals for five years, and we can’t wait to support his proposal.

What can food look like in a future where animals are not property? Jo-Anne has been documenting innovative companies answering this question.

One of them is Miyoko’s Creamery, founded and run by “the queen of vegan cheese,” Miyoko Schinner. Not only does Miyoko run a successful plant-based creamery and an animal sanctuary, she also recently won the legal right to use “butter,” “dairy” and “cruelty-free” in her marketing. Yes, the California Department of Food and Agriculture ordered her to stop. And lost.
