Dear CCT Members & Supporters,

Welcome to the first CCT Newsletter of 2022. Is it still OK to wish you all a Happy New Year? It already seems like a long time since the festive break and we have been busy at CCT, as you will see below.

There are a number of events coming up as well as a resumption of the Culbokie Indoor Market on 22 January. I would also draw your attention to some important announcements on funding, which will allow us to implement our plans for Culbokie Green.

Best wishes

Richard Fyfe
CCT Chairperson
Grant Funding Success for CCT

We are delighted to announce that CCT has been awarded a grant of £25,392.66 from the Rural Communities Ideas into Action Fund. This generous grant will allow us to install an outdoor table tennis table, natural play equipment, fencing, signage and other items. We will also be installing benches on site with funding from the Gordon & Ena Baxter Fund. We are looking forward to seeing the Culbokie Green take shape as these items are installed.

We are excited by the prospect of seeing these items on site and Culbokie Green will be sown, by Tulloch Homes, with a wildflower seed mix in Spring. This will need some time to establish before the area is ready for use and we hope it will set the village a-buzz. We hope to involve pupils from Culbokie Primary School in some tree planting (funding from the Highland Coastal Communities Fund) in March. The children are also working on creating some bee hotels for the village.

This is great news to share at the start of a New Year and the prospect of seeing Culbokie Green take shape is a real antidote to the rain which is currently beating against my study window!
CCT AGM 28th March 7pm

We have identified Monday 28th March at 7pm as the date for the AGM. We are currently finalising arrangement  and we hope to be able to offer this as a "blended" event with the option for both in-person and virtual attendance via Zoom. We have decided to try this to give the maximum opportunity for folks to attend.

We are always seeking to strengthen our Board and if you think you may be able to contribute to the work of CCT please get in touch. If you wish to attend one of our virtual Board meetings, with no commitment, we would be happy for you to join us. More details will appear in the February newsletter.

Culbokie Community Cycle Club Courses

CCCC has added another C (for “Courses”) to its acronym, with two free, half day, bike maintenance courses coming up, courtesy of funding from Cycling UK. The first of these, on 12th March, will deal with essential skills to deal with common problems like punctures, and the second, on 26th March, is a bit more advanced. Both will be afternoon courses, and will take place in Findon Hall. The club is also planning to organise another “Couch to 20 km” course, taking cyclists from little or no experience and fitness to riding 20 km over 6 weeks, provisionally starting on 30th March. All these probably feel a long way off just now – we’re still getting used to it being 2022! – but if anyone is interested, email cycling@culbokiect.org for more details. There are more details of the club, and a downloadable membership application form, on our website at https://www.culbokiect.org/index.asp?pageid=721570.

The dog poo fairy does not exist!

I am reproducing this article which appeared in the CCT newsletter last year. This is in response to a number of people raising concerns about the prevalence of doo poo on pavements around the village and woods.

What does exist, however, is a wonderful team of volunteers who work tirelessly to monitor, empty and maintain the six dog poo bins in Culbokie and Glascairn Woods.

Unfortunately, it has been brought to the attention of the Culbokie Community Trust (CCT) and Fertinosh Community Council (FCC) that entrances to our beautiful woods are becoming littered with dog mess.

Dog fouling is not only deeply unpleasant, but also dangerous. Whilst rare, contact with dog excrement can cause Toxocariasis - a nasty infection that can lead to dizziness, nausea, asthma and, in some cases, blindness and seizures.

Whilst most dog owners are caring, responsible individuals, there are still some people who do not clean up after their pets, or think it is acceptable to hang dog poo bags from trees!

We would like to urge everyone to take pride in where we live and act responsibly as dog owners to ensure we eradicate this problem. Please always pick up after your dog and use the dog poo bins that are provided.
