MrKisiel Interview
We caught up with MrKisiel for an insight into Map Making.

Q:
When did you start Minecraft Map Making?
A: I think it was back in 2012. After playing the original Herobrine's Mansion I was amazed by the possibilities of command blocks and shortly after I began making my own maps.

Q: What is your favourite map that you've made?
A: Definitely Songs of Greavesoyl. It's more than just a map, it's a universe I've been developing for years alongside releasing content updates.

Q: What is your favourite map that someone else made?
A: SpielmitStill's The Last Hope. It's a criminally underrated puzzle map with an awesome atmosphere and incredibly well-designed mechanics.

Q: What maps are you working on at the moment?
A: Dark and brutal first-person shooter called Antitheist. A map set in a post-apocalyptic dystopian future where all remaining humans are enslaved by a machine G.O.D., and the main character, titular antitheist, stands against it. You can expect fast-paced and unforgiving gameplay, depressing lore and biblically accurate biomechanical angels.

Q: What keeps you motivated when working on large map projects?
A: The possibility that one day, if I'll try hard enough, people will be comfortable with saying that my map is one of the best available in a given subgenre. That they will remember my maps, among all other generic parkours and adventures.

Q: What is a challenge you had to overcome whilst making a Minecraft Map?
A: I can't make everything at my own, and to fully realize my ideas I had to ask for help. Through mapmaking, I learned to work with other people.

Q: What's a feature you would like to see added to Minecraft for Map Makers?
A: Editing player's NBT, more control over sound (multiple layers for example) and the ability to just ignite and extinguish entities with one command. FFS we have a visual fire tag, why can I just set someone on fire?

Q:
In your opinion, what key components map a Minecraft Map successful?
A: Originality. Nobody will remember another walking simulator with forgotten memories texture packs.

Q:
Have you ever competed in a Map Jam?
A: Nope. I hate deadlines.

Q: What advice would you have for any aspiring Map Makers?
A: Mapmaking is more than commands and building. Learn game design too, not just how to build and optimize your code. Play other maps and games to get inspiration. Don't just re-create once successful ideas. Take the idea and make it even better.
