Emerald Alliance Update

February 2022
Here we are in the middle of February! Trees starting to bud and the birds more active, hinting that Spring is within sight.

Meanwhile, we are already more than halfway through the 2022 WA Legislative Session and seeing traction on bills addressing a variety of issues including sprawl, energy efficiency, housing affordability, transportation funding, and climate resilience. Since many of the bills introduced this year are focused on the built environment, we decided to steer this month’s newsletter toward the various intersections between conservation and housing.

Both of housing and conservation are connected to the health and sustainability of natural systems across Puget Sound and the health and wellness of its people, communities, and regional economy. And both drive toward the core founding message of the Emerald Alliance - that greater investments in our people & planet are essential to cultivate more sustainable, resilient communities and landscapes.

What Does Conservation Have to Do with Housing?

Historically, conservation and housing advocates have operated on different wavelengths with contrasting (sometimes conflicting) priorities. We are increasingly seeing collaboration between these sectors based on the need for and interest in a more inclusive and equity-focused approach to environmental work. In this exploratory piece, we approach the various intersections between housing and conservation - including density, land use, and environmental injustice - and look into a variety of local policy initiatives that drive toward sustainable land use.

Rec’N The Streets is a new program by Seattle Parks that brings recreational activities to communities with health disparities or limited access to recreation. The program launched in 2020, offering mobile playgrounds to communities in the summer. Now, they offer programs in the fall and winter, partnering with a variety of organizations to offer art, dance, fitness, and environmental activities. Learn more about their impact!
