What Makes It So Hard?
February 4, 2022

First, From the Heart

Many days contain a difficult encounter in life. Maybe you’ve recently experienced a hard conversation with a work colleague, family member, or even a stranger. When the going gets tough, how do you respond?

The choice is ours. Is my reaction understanding or snippy? Do I view the other person as “other” or as human, just like me? Might I consider they are doing the best they can, or do I race to judgement that they are wrong, bad, evil, or incompetent?

Choosing to respond with compassion can sometimes be challenging, even with our best intentions at the forefront. When I am run down, weary, recovering from another difficult moment, frustrated, or just hangry, the compassionate response may well elude me. It’s hard, because I am human. And I’m learning to notice, forgive, and love myself and others.

With heart,
Laura

Practice Matters

Nothing Separates Us

We are so adept at labeling and categorizing. This is what our minds do. Black, white, good, bad, mine, yours, right, wrong. In each nanosecond of awareness, we tend to judge and label – often without conscious attention to how our mind is beholden to the idea of separation.

The natural world, however, organizes around different principles. Connectedness, mutuality, support, and flourishing are just a few of the ways we witness nature unfolding. Surely there are moments of survival of the fittest that play out. But more pervasively, it is survival through cooperation that has brought everyone and everything to this precious moment in time.

Bringing attention to connection takes practice. Moving past the conditioning of our modern minds may seem like an impossible task, yet shifting attention is well within our control. In fact, it’s about all that we control! See what happens when you focus through the lens of interconnectedness and love.

When can we practice? Always!

Research Worth Sharing

The relationship between leader support, staff influence over decision making, work pressure and patient satisfaction: a cross-sectional analysis of NHS datasets in England
by Thomas H R West, Pascale Daher, Jeremy F Dawson, Joanne Lyubovnikova, Sandra C Buttigieg, and Michael A West
in BMJ Open 2022;12:e052778. doi: 10.1136/bmjopen-2021-052778

How can healthcare leaders shape the work environment in ways that support staff in delivering high quality patient care? This study establishes that giving staff the ability to influence decision-making, specifically as it affects work pressures, improves patient care. Nurses have known this. Doctors have known this. And now the evidence makes the case clear. Read the research.
