Process iPhone Infrared in Lightroom Mobile

It's only been the last year and a half since I began exploring how to create infrared images on the iPhone. Always in search of the best processing methods for IR, Lightroom Mobile has been a favorite tool for the edits required to bring these infrared imaged to life.

For additional information on creating infrared with your mobile phone, visit (or join!) our Facebook group, OPEN GROUP! Infrared on the iPhone and check out my in-depth video tutorial, How I Did It!™; Create Infrared Images on Your iPhone

My favorite Topaz tools, and the ones I use daily as part of my routine workflow, are Topaz Studio, DeNoise AI, and Sharpen AI

For smaller mobile images or big camera images that have been cropped,
Gigapixel AI enlarges and restores the image with integrity that exceeds the original image.

Here is a list of recent software updates from Topaz. I've only noted details when there are significant changes in the update.

Recent Topaz Software Updates
  • Video Enhance, V.2.6.2 December 16, 2021
  • Gigapixel AI v5.8m, February 3
    • Improved face refinement
    • Significant image quality improvements for Windows Users
    • Faster importing and exporting of images files by reducing memory usage
  • Sharpen AI V3.3, Feb 4th 2022
  • DeNoise 3.5.0, January 20
    • IMPORTANT: Mac OS minimum version has been bumped to 10.14. If you are on High Sierra you will need to update to Mojave or later. (Or, you may choose not to install this latest update until a later date.)

New Chat Bubble for Topaz Support

Topaz has also added a new way to submit a request for support, a Chat Bubble. Go to the Support tab on their website, click on the Chat Bubble, and enter your subject and provide details. At times, you'll get an immediate response, and at other times, you'll receive an email with answers to your questions in a few hours. The times I tried it, I received answers twice within two hours and another time, the next day. They still have a ways to go with support, but they are trying and moving in the right direction!

  • ShiftCam ProGrip and ProLens Kit Box Opening Video

ShiftCam has produced a well engineered and ergonomically satisfying grip for the iPhone (and other smart phones). Finally, there's a phone grip that is substantial, well designed, soundly built, and feels great in your hand! It works with BlueTooth and has rechargeable batteries that will charge your phone if it gets low on juice. The camera can be set to vertical or horizontal orientation, and the device serves as a phone stand with both horizontal and vertical positions. The set I purchased came with the ProLens Kit with a 16mm wide angle lens and a 60mm telephoto. This product is a treat!

  • Steve Koppel's Images and Philosophy an Inspiration to Photographers, Others
Photographer, Steven Koppel, lives on the Brewster Flats on Cape Cod, one of the most beautiful places on the Cape and, some would argue, in the world. Steve's images make a strong case for the latter!

Read my Blog Post to see more of Steve's images, learn about his gallery in Chatham, aptly named Expressions, his recent books, his efforts supporting the preservation of the Cape Cod National Sea Shore, and his non-profit, Expressive Digital Imaging (EDI), founded "to promote healing, connection and self-expression through imagery created on mobile devices."

Photography Workshops by Ramses Batista

Many of you know Cuban Photographer, Ramses Batista, from his extraordinary photography of dancers from the Cuban National Ballet and his photographs of Havana. You may have met him on one of the many workshops he and I have done together in Cuba, and more recently, in Atlanta. In December last year, Ramses relocated in Atlanta.

Ramses is offering his intimate, focused workshop series,
101 Photography Workshops, in which he teaches his unique style of off-camera flash photography to subtly illuminate portraits, create dramatic effects, and freeze motion. His groups are usually small, his models are local classical and contemporary dancers and fashion models, and the locations he's discovered around Atlanta are perfect backdrops for this kind of photography.

This past October, Ramses Batista and I joined forces to create the photo experience, Eclectic Atlanta. We'll take you to photograph photogenic locations in Atlanta including two beautiful gardens, the incomparable, Old Car City, and The Goat Farm Arts Center. Additionally, we'll guide you in learning to photograph models and dancers using off camera flash to stop motion and create exotic effects with light, a Ramses speciality! We are in he process of planning dates to shoot in warmer spring weather.

This workshop is for "big" camera photographers and mobile photographers, or both which is what Ramses and I do!

If you would like to be on our early notification list, email me here with Eclectic Atlanta in the subject line!

Dahlias – Flower Power!
Yes! It's Back!

With
Sally Wolf and Rad Drew

After a two year "pandemic hiatus," Sally Wolf and I are resurrecting our popular, Dahlias – Flower Power! workshop. The dates are September 11 to 15. We are still putting the website together, but if you'd like to be added to our early notification list, email me here with Dahlias – Flower Power! in the subject line.

We'll visit dahlia growers and other dahlia gardens in Northern Indiana where we'll see some of the most exotic and rarest dahlias in the world. We'll be photographing with a variety of "big" cameras and mobile cameras, and offer guidance on both photographing and processing. Come share the magic and mystery of getting lost in dahlia blossoms with us!

Invite Me to Give a Virtual Presentation!

A Sign of the Times...

Virtual Club Meetings, Photo Conferences,
and Corporate Presentations

When the pandemic struck, like most photographers who traveled, I had to reinvent myself! It was in March of 2020 that I stepped up my on-line instruction game. Thinking back on it now, I remember how baffled many of us were with Zoom and how it worked. Today, I dare say, we've become experts!

While I've scheduled travel again in 2022, I am continuing to offer on-line instruction webinars to camera clubs, virtual photo conferences, small business groups, and corporations.

Thank you to all of the groups, businesses, and clubs who have invited me to present or speak on desktop photo editing and/or mobile photography. It's been a pleasure and I'm grateful for your support!

If you belong to a camera club or a business group and would like a webinar presentation on any number of mobile phone or desktop processing topics, I invite you to contact me. I have a number of topics to share and a process for working with your group that is pretty seamless given all the recent practice.

For more information about topics, pricing, and my process for promoting and setup, please visit my web page here. If you still have questions, or would like to "tweak" the process to meet your group's specific needs, let's talk!

In the meantime, be safe and stay well!

Supporting Mass Audubon with Bird Prints

Here is one of the many ways photography is making a difference in our world!

My friend and photographer, Amanda Reed, a resident of Cape Cod, is part of an effort to bring awareness to endangered birds. Amanda's print of the Common Loon is based on her photograph made in Kamloops, BC, a couple of years ago. The print is made from a woodcut and hand printed.

Amanda's print is one of a collection of prints at Zea Mays Printmaking and part of a traveling exhibit.

Prints from this show are $75 each. All prints are made using upcycled printing plates, either provided by the artist or by Zea Mays Printmaking. The prints in this show are hand printed on a variety of papers and are all unframed and 8″ x 10″ in size.

Proceeds from sales will be shared with the Mass Audubon Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary and the National Audubon Society as well as supporting Zea Mays Printmaking’s technical research.

You will find Amanda's print and others in the collection at Zea Mays Printmaking

Update on Life in Cuba

UPDATE:
Little by little, life in Cuba is improving, but the struggling economy, food and medicine shortages, inflation, Covid, and civil unrest continue to pose challenges. Tourism which resumed falteringly in November on a small scale, has increased, but the ability to freely roam the streets of Havana as we have done in the past is discouraged.

Ramses Batista and I look forward to resuming our photo workshops to Cuba when it is safe for everyone. We began talking this week about what type of trip would be safest for everyone involved and we hope to be returning in the spring.

If you'd like to be added to our early notification list when we begin to schedule trips, you can email me here and we will make sure you are among the first to learn about any trips we schedule.

Over the past year, you've answered the call to several drives to collect resources to help our friends.Thank you to all who have been so supportive and given so much. Know that your gifts make a tremendous difference. I expect to be making another effort in the next month.

If you would like to know more about how you can help or if you'd like to participate in future efforts to help, please email me here for more information.

Other Opportunities to Help

Our friend Roly Castellini continues to create extraordinary paintings and is offering them for sale. Please email me here if you have an interest in Roly's work. This is Roly, standing next to a favorite example of his work from several years ago.

In his description of this painting Roly wrote:

One of my biggest passions... the ocean... to be floating in the open sea
with my sight lost in the blue sky, is magical.
This is the kind of paintings I'll probably dedicate my career to as I've the dream to become an ocean Hyper-realistic artist.

When I feel stressed this is what I paint... it keeps me calm, it keeps me away from the grim reality that surrounds me and it gives me inspiration!

Peggy made her first trip to Cuba in 2014 and then made two trips in 2019 and 2020 with Ramses Batista and Rad Drew (moi). See her work currently on exhibit and for sale, and learn how the proceeds from sales will benefit our friends in Cuba.

UPDATE on Peggy Jansson's show.

Peggy's show was very successful and led to several sales which she will be using to help friends in Cuba. There are still works available, so, if you would like more information about the remaining prints, email me here for further information!
