The Cavani Quartet with Annie Fullard, CLMF ‘14, Catherine Cosbey, CLMF ‘19, Eric Wong CLMF 15’-21', Kyle Price, CLMF Founder & Artistic Director recently completed their BEYOND BEETHOVEN concert cycle. This rigorous, four-month journey included performances of the complete string quartets of Beethoven and featured works by eight of the most celebrated living composers: Tan Dun, Osvaldo Golijov, Jessie Montgomery, Gabriela Lena Frank, Eric Gould, Caroline Shaw, Dinuk Wijeratne, and Josh Henderson CLMF 18'-21'. They curated the BEYOND BEETHOVEN cycle with the idea to illuminate the power of chamber music, to transcend boundaries, and to celebrate diversity in voices and ideas and we are thrilled to have been able to make these goals a reality.
Cavani performed side by side with a group made up of more than 90 high school-aged young artists, their incredible teachers, and special guests violinist/composer Josh Henderson and Dr. Ronald Crutcher, President Emeritus of the University of Richmond. The program featured not one but two world premieres: Camari Dodson-Poindexter’s Serenity for cello quintet and Josh Henderson’s A Bop for Bridge, written for the Cavani Quartet and string orchestra. They also performed Beethoven’s last completed work, his profoundly positive Opus 135, and ended this tour de force concert with students, teachers, and Cavani together on stage, performing the finale of Beethoven’s electrifying String Quartet Op. 59, No. 3 in mass ensemble.
