Spring 2022 Sustainability Research and Practice Seminar

Join us Wednesday at noon on Zoom or in person in Sykes 255A/B.
WCU staff members, the date for the next Brandywine Project Staff Sustainability Workshop is set for Wednesday, April 20th (Earth Week)! While the details of the workshop are still in the planning stages, the scoop is that it will be held in-person and for the first time ever, in a location outdoors. Talk about a much needed breath of fresh air! The Brandywine Project Staff Planning Team is really cooking up something special, so be sure to save the date now before your calendars fill up. This is a great opportunity to take a half day to network with colleagues across campus, learn about important sustainability issues and ongoing work, and truly invest in yourself (not to mention the free food). ;-)
This week, for our Spotted in the GNA feature, we're sharing our first night vision image of a Southern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans). This photograph was part of a research study conducted by Temple University Ph.D. candidate Peyton Phillips, utilizing the Gordon Natural Area. Peyton was researching the ways in which mammals contribute to the spread of Lyme Disease in our region.
Despite its name, the Southern Flying Squirrel does not actually fly, but glides through the air. They are able to launch either from a stationary position or by taking a running start, and are believed to use triangulation to accurately plot their "flight" pattern. Amazingly, these mammals, using what's called patagium, or the membrane that stretches between their front and rear legs, can maneuver around obstacles while airborne up to 90 degrees!
Remember, you can find a whole host of images and information about the hundreds of species found in the Gordon Natural Area by accessing the GNA'sBiotapage.
