February is a great time to complete some key action steps
in the college process, listed below for grades 9-12.

Seniors

As second semester gets underway, do not get senioritis. The work you do this year is the best predictor of the kind of work you will do in college. Colleges care a lot about senior year grades and school involvement!

Remember to diligently monitor your application portals as they will show you when your application is complete and ready for review. They often also show your admissions decision. If you were deferred from a college and you remain interested, write an email about your continued interest and include updates and additions to your application. Juniors
Begin to work on identifying two academic teachers who can write letters of recommendation for you. Click HERE and HERE for guides on how to ask for a letter of recommendation. As you continue to refine and research the schools on your exploratory list, explore different settings and locations to see what might be right for you. If you have not already, make sure to register for standardized tests including the SAT and or the ACT and work on your standardized testing preparation plan.

Sophomores

Continue to get involved and look for opportunities to deepen your involvement in both your academic and extracurriculars. Build out your list of exploratory colleges and conduct preliminary research on schools you might be interested in attending. Schedule a meeting with your school counselor to select your 11th grade classes. Take the most demanding academic program that will align with your ability and interests, in which you can do well. Continue building a relationship with your counselor by meeting regularly.

Freshmen

Continue to look for ways to explore your interests and get involved across sports, arts, community service, clubs, and organizations. Depth means more than breadth. If you have not already, make sure you create a resume. If you have started one, make sure you continue to build it out and update it as you get involved in more extracurriculars and activities.

Make sure you develop and solidify your plans for this summer. Take advantage of the opportunity to do something you care about. Remember, what you do in high school counts and becomes part of your story. work on writing a story you will be proud to tell when you are a senior applying to college!
