Fire Roasted Seafood Stew / Ron Knerr
The Copper Crow
In a newly opened restaurant created by co-owners Scott Dougherty and Bruce Goodman, the Copper Crow’s popularity has made it a hot ticket reservation in the brief time it’s been open (August 2021). Located in the corner of a shopping center on Welsh Road in Horsham, The Copper Crow offers casual dining in a classy, modern environment.
As previous business partners, Dougherty and Goodman bought the Blue Bell Inn from the Lamprecht family in 2012, reopening the spot after a renovation (Blue Bell Inn was subject of a previous review in http://www.amobeablefeastmontco.com). Dougherty has previous experience as owner of Bridget’s (Ambler) and Goodman as the owner of Bluestone Country Club (formerly Meadowlands). The pair brought Chef Pete Sherba to The Crow after he assisted with the development of the menu at the Blue Bell Inn and Bluestone Country Club. (Sherba gained early experience at his family’s Mainland Restaurant (Long Beach Island).

...the rest of Ron's column
A long bar on the first floor adjoins a sixty-seat dining area with supplemental seating upstairs and an outdoor space behind rollup garage doors like the set up at the Blue Bell Inn. The dining area is a brightly lit space with modern décor that makes for a comfortable dining environment to enjoy a meal.
We visited the Crow twice before this review, as a multi-seat reservation was difficult to obtain on short notice. DW Sherri and I sampled the fare on a weeknight before we scheduled a second reservation for a group of six a few weeks later after it won our confidence. (Reservations are available on OpenTable.)
The menu has a variety of dishes to choose from that will satisfy a range of appetites and palates. Smaller portion options include Soups and Salads, as well as a wide variety of Starters and Small Plates including Lava Rock Wagyu, Charred Octopus, Lamb Lollipops, Duck Confit Grilled Cheese, Crab and Avocado Toast, Smoked Diver Scallops, Mussels Frites, and Birria Tacos. Personal size wood fired pizza choices include Margherita, Di Bruno Bros. Pepperoni, The Quack, Tomato Pie, and Bacon and Onion.
A limited sandwich menu offers Burgers (Beef or Lamb) or a Shaved Flank Steak Sandwich. Chophouse choices include NY Strip, Filet Mignon, Wagyu Flank Steak or a Bone-In Prime Porkchop with additional entrees of Wood Fired Paella, Airline Chicken, Salmon Dan Dan, Whole Branzino, Veal Chop au Poivre, Spicy Crab Pasta, Spinach Pasta, and Steak Fries. Note that the menu changes periodically based upon market conditions and chef's preferences.
Specialty cocktails started off our meals and DW chose a Grey Goose Cosmo while I chose the Spicy Pomegranate Ginger Paloma on both of my visits – a perfect blend of Hornitas Tequila, Triple Sec, pomegranate, grapefruit, and lime served with a spicy salted rim. (Wine and draught and bottled beers are available as well)
Over the course of our two visits, diners selected a decent sampling of the menu offerings (with some helpful guidance from our server). On both visits we chose to start with the Crow Fries, served hot and crisp with hints of truffle oil accompanied by ketchup and a delicious aioli sauce. These fries were a hit with everyone and earn a recommendation for those partial to truffle flavoring. DW Sherri sampled the Chop Salad on the first visit and the Chicken Corn Soup du Jour on the second visit. The salad was the winner here, with mixed Iceberg and Romaine greens, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, and pecans served with Green Goddess dressing. The soup was a pureed variety that had a good taste but lacked any special pizzazz.
Two pizza varieties were sampled with DW choosing the Margherita pizza and another diner choosing “The Quack” - a pie constructed with Duck Confit, Caramelized Onion Puree, Brussels Sprouts, Smoked Gouda, dressed with a Balsamic Reduction. Both pies were very good and DW and I graded the pie as one of the better wood-fired pies we’ve sampled, with special mention for a good crust.
On my first visit I chose the Wood Fired Paella (since replaced by Fire Roasted Seafood Stew), made with Shrimp, Scallops, Clams & Mussels in Sofrito and Lemon Saffron Rice with Peas. This dish was my favorite over the course of our visits and another diner agreed during our second visit. On the second visit I chose the Wagyu Flank Steak sandwich, constructed with Baby Arugula, Roasted Red Pepper, Havarti Cheese, Chimichurri on a Ciabatta roll- a decent sandwich but it was a bit short on the main beef component. Other selections included the All-American burger and the Salmon Dan Dan made with Miso and Mirin Glazed Salmon, Chinese BBQ Mushrooms, Udon Noodles, Scallions, and Peanuts.
You know what happens when we have a delicious meal – it’s time to sample dessert. After a successful sampling on our first visit, we reordered the Sweet Potato Crisp for dessert. I’m not a sweet potato fan, but this dessert has a creamy sweet potato base and is covered with a sweet crispy top, adorned with pecans and vanilla ice cream.
Great service, tasty food and drinks, and a suitable variety of menu choices make the Copper Crow a place to add to your dining list. Live entertainment, Opentable reservations, private party space available.
