Dear Fellow Rotarians and Friends,

It is pleasing to have 2022 active and underway and to catch up with so many of our members at our weekly meeting.   It was particularly special to see our newest Honorary Member Dick Dawes attend our first face-to-face meeting this year with the help of his son in law Chris Grant.  Welcome back Dick and great to hear that you are now in the vicinity of Lane Cove.  Last week, some of our members had a very nice dinner get-together at the King’s Dynasty Restaurant in Chatswood to celebrate the Year of the Tiger.

We took the opportunity to conduct a Club Assembly this week to take stock of what we have achieved over the last six months and what we can look forward to in the coming six months.  Certainly, we have had some active community presence with PETO BBQ, Australia Day BBQ, sales of puddings, towels, and books to the public, and not forgetting selling Raffles tickets.

Brian Hall is working to bring 2 new international projects to the club while maintaining the momentum with our two long-standing projects.  Tania advises that our bank balances are looking healthy and that we can continue with our annual club giving initiatives. Craig is working on some new club project initiatives and has us registered for Clean Up Australia Day on 6 March. Brooke is keeping tabs on Youth programs while Adrienne works hard to get as much publicity for the Club as well.  I thank all Board members for their continued hard work through the Rotary year.

In terms of youth activities, the January 2022 RYLA Program has been postponed due to COVID concerns, and the Winter RYPEN camp also has been postponed to next year. We look forward to inviting Kingston Wong to speak about his experiences as an NYSF student to the club via Zoom.

I am very excited about the recycled bench to be installed at Lane Cove Public School which should be ready for delivery in a month’s time and the terra cycle bins to collect disposable face masks.  All these activities ensure high visibility for our Club.

Next week is the official visit of DG Lindsay to the Club and we look forward to it as he and Tania come to the tail end of visiting 67 clubs in District 9685 – an amazing feat.  We also have some interesting speakers lined up for the coming weeks – so stay tuned.

Rotarian Pat Price's report on a ‘Start-up’ project of note at Heartland College,
 Kathmandu, Nepal
(A project supported by Lane Cove Rotary)
“Heartland College ‘start up’ project: Menstrual Health awareness program. This program was initiated, coordinated and delivered as part of one of the school’s leadership initiatives. Whereby final year college students have the opportunity to coordinate a program or activity that they are passionate about in a community of their choice. Here we have five of our current Education stream students (supported by our Global Grant) who throughout January delivered workshops and skill building programs to more than five hundred people in the Nuwarkot region about menstruation, positive health promotion practices and awareness in an effort to shift long standing cultural issues that affected thousands of young women in Nepal.
Fantastic leadership shown here, significant impact and strong Rotary themes in action”.

Did you know? February is Peace and Conflict Resolution Month.
Rotarians refuse to accept conflict as a way of life.  Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.
Through our service projects, peace fellowships, and scholarships, our members are taking action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, inequality, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
Through academic training, study, and practice the Rotary Peace Centres program develops leaders who become catalysts for peace and conflict prevention and resolution in their communities and around the globe.  Graduates of the program are reintegrating refugees in Sudan, creating jobs for disadvantaged women in India, and supporting reconstruction in devastated regions of the world.
