Kia ora Freyberg Whānau,

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend our virtual meet the teacher event today. It was great to be able to connect with you all and to start to build relationships with both you and your tamariki!

As we begin the year, I want to acknowledge that we are heading into Term 1 with a lot of uncertainty. Though there may be differing perspectives about our national pandemic response, Freyberg Community School's number one priority is, and always has been, to ensure that our learning environment is safe and supportive for all of our students. The protocols we have put in place have been developed under direct guidance from the Ministry of Education, with support from the Ministry of Health.

There will be challenges as we adjust to the current Omicron response, and these will affect all of our students. The challenge for us as adults is to remain positive for our tamariki, and continue to demonstrate empathy and optimism while following the guidelines that are in place to keep everyone  safe.

We know it is expected that March and April will see the peak spread of Omicron. The Ministry of Education expects most schools to remain open, although how we provide teaching may need to change. If we experience high levels of staff sickness or isolation to a point where we cannot keep our classrooms operating safely, we have the option of temporarily moving to a hybrid model of teaching (both school and home-based learning). If this does occur we have plans in place to manage this.

As always, thank you for your ongoing support throughout these uncertain times. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher or admin@freyberg.school.nz.

Noho ora mai - stay well,

Maria Dopheide
