Inquiry on Homelessness Services in WA

WALGA is seeking feedback from the Local Government sector to inform a submission to the Legislative Council WA Standing Committee on Estimates and Financial Operations Inquiry on funding of homelessness services.

The Inquiry presents an opportunity for the sector to provide feedback to State Parliament on the delivery of homelessness services in WA, with the view to ensuring funds spent on homelessness services maximise returns for the community.

Local Governments are encouraged to read the Consultation Paper and complete the Online Survey by COB Friday, 11 February 2022. Please note that each Local Government should only complete one online survey.

For further information, please contact, Senior Policy Advisor, Community, Vikki Barlow or call 9213 2074.

Cockburn Council Endorses New Aboriginal Cultural and Visitors Centre

Cockburn Council has endorsed a revised concept for the $12.5m Aboriginal Cultural and Visitors Centre on Walliabup-Bibra Lake with construction scheduled to begin this year.

The development of an Aboriginal Cultural and Visitors Centre was identified as a key priority in the City's Reconciliation Action Plan. Its design is inspired by the area’s native South-western snake-necked turtle, making it a unique attraction in Perth, with projected annual visitors of approximately 20,000.

It will also provide employment and small business opportunities for Aboriginal people through the creation of dedicated Aboriginal positions which recognise the need to have particular activities delivered by Aboriginal people.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples hold a special place in our communities and connect the broader population with a wealth of history, tradition and culture which enriches our society.  Our work regularly takes us across the State and as such WALGA would like to acknowledge the many traditional owners of the land on which we work throughout Western Australia. We pay our respects to their Elders, past, present and emerging.
