The More You Know---

February: Frostbite and Hypothermia

Winter weather will be here in Minnesota for a few more weeks and even colder weather is coming. In cold temperatures like these, the body loses heat faster than it can produce it which can lead to serious problems like frostbite and hypothermia!

When in a situation where frostbite or hypothermia could arise, there are three important steps to remember AVOID, SPOT, TREAT

AVOID: If you have to go outside, dress properly with many layers. When going outside be sure to wear:
  • a scarf or knit
  • mask that covers
  • face & mouth
  • mittens or gloves
  • water-resistant boots
  • a hat
  • a water-resistant coat
  • several layers of loose-fitting clothing
The nose, ears, toes, cheeks, chin, and fingers are most often affected by frostbite so need to be covered with warm, dry clothing. It is also important to know who is at higher risk for frostbite like older adults, those who spend long periods of time outdoors, people who drink alcohol in access or use illicit drugs, and babies sleeping in cold rooms.

SPOT: Know the signs and symptoms of both:
  • Frostbite:
    • Redness or pain in any skin area may be the first sign
    • A white or gray-yellow skin areas
    • Skin that feels unusually firm or waxy
    • Numbness
  •  Hypothermia signs and symptoms vary between adults and infants:
    • Adults
      • Shivering
      • Exhaustion
      • Confusion
      • Fumbling hands
      • Memory loss
      • Slurred speech
      • Drowsiness
    • Infants
      • Bright red, cold skin
      • Very low energy
It is a medical emergency when anyone's body temperature goes below 95 degrees Fahrenheit.

TREAT: If someone is experiencing hypothermia or frostbite there are five important things to do:
  • Seek medical attention as soon as possible
  • Take the person to a warm room or shelter
  • Remove any clothing that is wet
  • Warm them under dry layers of blankets and clothing
  • Place areas affected by frostbite in warm to the touch water

Additional precaution when treating frostbite: Since skin may be numb, victims of frostbite can harm themselves further. Use caution when treating frostbite and:

  1. Unless necessary, do not walk on feet or toes with frostbite
  2. Do not use a fireplace, heat lamp, radiator, or stove for warming
  3. Do not use a heating pad or electric blanket for warming
  4. Do not rub or massage areas with frostbite
