Bristol Diocese Face to Face Consultation
with Afrikan Hertage Christians.
Saturday 19th February 20

10am-2pm
Greetings my name is Cleo Lake and I am doing some work on behalf of Bristol Cathedral.

In June last year, Bishop Viv made a commitment on behalf of Bristol Diocese and Cathedral to address issues of racism in the church. In that statement she committed to acknowledge and repent of the Church’s past involvement in and benefit from the Transatlantic Traffic in Enslaved Africans (commonly referred to as the slave trade).
Bristol Cathedral are conscious of the legacy of that ‘trade’ expressed in hundreds of monuments in our building to men and women who benefitted, whether as plantation or people owners, or the recipients or inheritors of compensation for the enslaved freed at abolition.

The Cathedral is currently undertaking a detailed audit of those monuments, uncovering the stories of those who were trafficked and enslaved, and their descendants, as well as the scale of the economy in the life of the benefactors of the Cathedral.

The Cathedral wants to express our repentance and to heal our relationships with those whose life experience has been impacted by the legacy of enslavement and empire. To do this work, I have been commissioned to undertake an engagement project with ‘UKME’ Anglicans, seeking their views on the monuments in the Cathedral and more generally, on ways in which we can respond to the legacy of enslavement. I will be building on a similar project carried out by Bristol City Council, asking questions about identity, sense of belonging, awareness of – and feelings about – memorials, whether they should be removed, what stories should be told, and what actions would help restore and repair our relationships with one another and to ensure that everyone feels welcome in the Cathedral and understands that it is a place for them.

It's too late to get involved:

We have held some online conversations, which has now led us to the next step which is to meet face to face.

Please join us at Bristol Cathedral

On: Saturday 9th February 2022
Time: 10am-2pm
RSVP if you will be joining us.

Hopeful regards

Racial Justice Sunday 13 Feb 2022

Churches Together in Britain and Ireland has produced a resource for Racial Justice Sunday 2022. It is the product of ecumenical cooperation and partnership between Christian church denominations, parachurch organisations and groups, and individuals in Wales, Scotland, Ireland and England – the four nations.

The Catholic Church in England and Wales has also produced resources building on those it produced last year, Racial Justice Sunday ‘A Time to Act’, which reflected on the importance of everyone recognising themselves, their race, their culture and their history in the life of the Church.

Racial Justice: What’s it got to do with me?

This is very much a call for all Christians to engage in the righteous struggle for racial justice because racial justice is everyone’s business.

As we shall see in this resource for Racial Justice Sunday 2022, the Bible has a lot to say about justice because as God’s Word, it reflects God’s heart for justice. It can be argued that we should love justice because God does! Racism and racial discrimination are justice issues because they deny basic justice and human dignity to women and men who are made in the image of God. Equally, they are sinful because, among other issues, they assume all are not equal before God and are not part of God’s family.

For those who have previously not engaged with RJS because they did not feel equipped to do so, this resource will provide them with the tools to play an active role in this work.

Who is the resource for?

It is an opportunity for all churches to focus on the three ‘R’s of ‘Remembering’, ‘Reflecting’ and ‘Responding’:

  • Remembering the importance of racial justice.
  • Reflecting on human diversity and thanking God for it.
  • Responding by working to end injustice, racism and ignorance through
    prayer and action.
How can the resource be used?

This publication is divided into two sections:

  • The first contains a range of materials that will enable churches and congregations to carry out an act of worship or a service focusing on racial justice.
  • The second section provides churches, congregations, parachurch groups and individuals with information, ideas and activities that enable them to continue the conversations that may emanate from RJS.  Download the pdf

Survey c/d 14 Feb

Dear All,

Please see below, sent on behalf of ICE Mental Health Transformation Group.

*******

Have your say on outcome measures for mental health

Have you used a mental health service or know someone who has? Or perhaps you’ve referred people to a service, or you volunteer at one?

The Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG) Clinical Commissioning Group is asking for your opinion on the set of questions.

When a person requires mental health support, they’re asked a set of questions to inform what services they need. The same questions are asked over time to monitor what impact the service has made. Many different questions can be asked, but services providers want to use a standardised approach called a Person-Reported Outcome Measure (PROM).

To decide which PROM would be most suitable, the NHS is asking people with lived experience of mental health support, their families and carers, health and care staff and volunteers, to fill out a survey. Your responses will help inform which PROM is recommended and why.

Improving the mental health of our population is a critical priority for the BNSSG health and care system. A new Community Mental Health Service is being developed to change the way people experience and access support. Local health and care experts and representatives, and their carers, have come together to co-design a new approach that offers the right support, at the right time, in the right place. A more standardised set questions will help to ensure this new service meets the needs of the people who access it.

Your opinion matters.

Please click on the link and complete the survey
before February 14th to participate in the consultation. https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/CMHS_PROM_engagement
