I haven’t quite got my footing firmly in 2022. I keep thinking it’s still 2021 - really the beginning of 2021. In my body and mind it can’t possibly be February 2022!! But here we are. The wheel of the year keeps moving - steady and rhythmic no matter if this humble human wishes for everything around me to pause.
However, we can pause just for a moment for ourselves. Spaciousness and time are friends of our nervous systems. They give our system time to process and digest what meets us each day. While our society seems to be against offering space and time to most of us, the important question is where can we each, drip by drip incorporate a millimeter of more time and space into our lives?
The new year in December is just one of many throughout the world. And if there isn’t just one new year, who is to say we can’t create our own? We can pause, start again, celebrate a new year each day of the year. I like to celebrate my birthday as a new year, less pressure to be in sync with the world’s. And then we have examples of New Years beyond the western world’s New Years Eve. The Jewish new year is in the Fall, the Islamic New Year is in July this year, and the Chinese Lunar New Year is this week.
If beginnings and endings on a year long trajectory are too much to absorb, monthly we have the example of the moon and daily the cycle of the sun. Micro-cycles we could follow are hours, minutes, secs. Grand cycles can be challenging for many of us, scaling down our expectations can lead us to the subtle & consistent shifts we desire. All of these examples show us culturally, naturally, personally there are so many opportunities of renewal and beginnings beyond what society has ascribed to us.
One of my favorite spaces to begin again is the quarter days between the equinoxes and solstices. These quarter days are the places that if you give enough attention, you can see the ratio of day to night shifting, the plants changing, and the energetics of the season rewiring. This late winter/early spring festival is traditionally known as Imbolc, The Celtic pagan holiday. Snow drops, fires to St. Brigid, healing herbs, and clearing out the old is often how one marks this “quickening of the year.” It is the fertile darkness that is rich with possibility and knowing.
This quarter days remind us that we can be like a seed and embrace the fertile darkness of the moment. We don’t need to rush into a new year because society pressures us to. Many of us haven’t had enough time and space to digest the year before. Frankly, maybe we won’t get that time for many years to come. But here, in 2022, that feels like early 2021 to me and maybe 2019 or some other year to you, we can consider ourselves seeds which hold our wholeness squarely within ourselves.
This year especially with this day of wholeness and possibility under a new moon, I invite you to share with yourself what resides inside you that isn’t ready for the light of day? What treasures are buried deep within? Share them with yourself as an offering of self-compassion. Compassion for your rhythm, your space, your wholeness. And when you’re ready, begin anew.
