Oh, that winning feeling!

All sport requires a sense of humility and rugby is certainly no exception.  But at times we can allow ourselves to puff out our chests and revel in victory.  Last weekend was such a time.

On Saturday, the Senior Men delivered a clean sweep.  The 1st XV put in a brilliant shift to hammer Hammersmith and Fulham 49-7, the Warriors did for Old Whitgiftians 35-12 and the Barbarians returned from a tricky trip to Chichester with a hard won scalp, 25-38. The Vikings had a walk over against Esher - a "major" Surrey club unable to raise a 3rd XV!

On Sunday, the next generation maintained the momentum with the Academy playing some dazzling rugby to beat Richmond 24-33 while the U18 Girls secured the 'W' in their very first full 15-a-side cup game beating Dorking 33-21.  The U16Bs earned a magnificent victory down at Trojans coming from behind to steal the game 24-25.  Read a fab report below. Never in doubt!

Let's hope the ball keeps rolling this coming this weekend - and even if your team does not win, you can be proud of the sheer volume of good rugby your club will play and grateful for the volunteers that make it happen.

Much to enjoy

1st XV No 10 Matt Farnes (above) is obviously enjoying his rugby at Farnham - and there is much to entertain us all this coming weekend.

The 1st XV top the bill with their COVID-postponed match against Camberley RFC.  Both teams will be well up for this eagerly anticipated derby. "Cam" beat league leaders London Welsh last Saturday. However their match report sounds a word of warning; "after the celebrations tonight all minds will turn to our upcoming visit to Farnham who, it would seem, gave Hammersmith a bit of a pasting."

This not-to-be-missed match will be preceded by our traditional Supporters Lunch to which all are invited.

To book your seat(s) email chairman@farnhamrugby.org.

Your hot lunch followed by cheese and coffee costs £20.00.  Pay on the day at the bar by card (only) and your till receipt is put in a bowl to be your ticket for the post-lunch raffle.  Good luck!

We'll sit for lunch at 12.30.  February's league games officially kick off at 2.30pm, but we have agreed a 2.00pm start to accommodate the fact that we'll be showing the Calcutta Cup on the big screens. KO 16.45.

What a feast of rugby!

Being an international week-end there are no other senior league games on Saturday, however the Warriors launch their Cup campaign at Trinity RFC.

Next Sunday, we field  - home and away -  no less than eleven boy's teams from U12 to U17/18 in cup matches and will send thirteen squads aged U7-U11 to the Guildford Mini Festival.  Meanwhile., the Falcons 1st XV team travel to Reading to play the Rams Sirens in a league match.

The prelude to the weekend's rugby is provided by the Vets who entertain Alton on Friday evening under lights at Monkton Lane - no better place to take your Friday pint! KO 7.00pm

Good luck to all who run onto the pitch this weekend in the black and white!

U16 centre James Goldsworth clings on to halt another Trojan attack.

Last Sunday the team came up against a well drilled, strong and organised Trojan side in the Hampshire Cup.  In the opening exchanges, their pick-and-go game put Farnham on the back foot. However, the lads kept their composure, organised defensive lines and stuck to the task at hand.

Despite ferocious tackling led by Ben Douglas, Trojans scored their first try early in the match but missed the conversion (5-0).  Trojans came back from the restart with their direct approach using their strong runners to score their second try which was converted (12-0).

At the team chat under the posts, the Farnham boys were not demoralised but did conclude they would lose an arm wrestle. The plan now was to put some width on the ball.  The plan worked. With the Trojan defence split, Hamish Ferguson dotted down out wide. Back came Trojans with other try from their strong runners, but unbowed, Farnham replied with their open, expansive style and after a skilful kick chase, Eddie Buckton went over for the black and whites. 19-10 at half time.

The coaches let the boys do the talking at the half time talk. They chose to stick to their guns to beat this well drilled and physically stronger side – something they were confident they could achieve.  This confidence soon became apparent in the way they took players to the ground, worked hard and put their bodies on the line for each other.  In particular, James Grey, the tallest member of the black and whites, provided the physical presence required of a winning side in rugby. Farnham were next to score with Jasper Henderson to the corner with a great touchdown (19-15).

Trojans proved they would be no pushover, worked to their strength and came back with a try of their own (24-15). However, across the park, Farnham was gaining the upper hand.  From the restart, Farnham drove up the pitch to within eight meters. The ball was popped to Ollie Lewis-Gorton who took two defenders with him over the line.  Up stepped George Fletcher to smash the conversion between the posts. 24-22.

With 15 minutes to go, the two sides went toe-to-toe for five minutes until Farnham broke the midfield deadlock with a long raking kick down field.  Well chased by the attackers, the Trojan defender could only cling to the ball and give away the penalty.   The Farnham team now showed maturity beyond their years by opting to take the points and a one-point lead.  Once again, Fletcher calmly stepped up and kicked the goal. 24-25.

In the last ten minutes, Farnham kept their heads, played their game and kept Trojans at bay.  In the final seconds of the game, however, Farnham conceded a penalty on their 10m line and Trojans opted for a long-range kick at goal to nick the game. The kick was accurate but inches short and the ball bounced off the cross bar back into play. The Farnham coaches looked on with their hearts in their mouths as their charges calmly set the ruck, recycled the ball and gratefully hoofed it into touch for the final whistle and the win.

“Every one of the lads put their hands up and did their bit to come back from such a deficit against a very strong team.  They should all be very proud of this achievement,” said age group head coach Gavin Baker. “They were all men of the match but we had to choose one and that was Elliot Davies. He was immense all game!”

The Academy prevails

The lads recorded a very good 24-33 win away at Richmond RFC to progress in the Surrey Rugby’s Quins Cup.  The Quins Cup is the county’s premier competition for Under 15 to Academy (U17/18) age groups.

In an entertaining nine try game, Farnham played flowing rugby to strike first and led 14-7 at half time.

Excellent use of turnover ball pushed produced a third Farnham try early in the second half before Richmond staged a determined comeback using their heavier pack in pick-and-go mode to close the gap to just two points. With intense pressure on the Farnham line, a Richmond pass to space was intercepted by Farnham 10, Stan Platt.  He burst out and following sharp interplay with his winger, touched down for Farnham under the posts making for a simple conversion to create a two-score gap that Richmond were unable to close.

The battle to repel Richmond pressure with determined work on the fringes reminded the Farnham team that though they play an open running game well, close-quarters defence remains a key strength. Farnham’s other tries were scored by Max Williams and Joe Brockman with two. As well as his own try, Platt converted two other attempts.

Action from Farnham U18 Girls first ever cup game against Dorking. Becca Johnson breaks out for Farnham with Maddie Healey and Isobel Newness-Smith in support.  Farnham won the home tie 33-21 with two tries from Maddie and one each for Holly Thompson, Rosie Peet and Liv Price with Tegan Larvan successfully converting three of them.

Award winning volunteers

Sport Farnham

Next Monday (7/2) from 7.00pm at the clubhouse, a procession of clubs, teams and individuals from Farnham's sporting community will make their way forward to collect one of a series of annual awards presented by Farnham Sports Council.

Your club has two nominees to join this pantheon of local sporting excellence.

Brian Messenger is up for Volunteer of the Year in recognition of his tireless efforts as Mini Junior Fixtures Secretary. While there is no doubting the contribution of all our coaches and admins, many of our youngsters would not get a game were it not for Brian's commitment, energy and diplomacy.

Etienne Van Der Brink is nominated for Coach of the Year for his work developing the Girls into a most vibrant section of the club and so bringing a host of young people into our game.

All members are invited to enjoy this celebration of local sport and, if justice be served, applaud Brian and Etienne on their well deserved awards.
