Dear <<First Name>>,

Greetings from the Center for Faculty Advancement (CFA)! As we begin the spring 2022 semester, and continue to balance teaching, health, and safety, we want to affirm that we are here to support you, and to offer new programs and resources. Some highlights include:

NYU’s Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA) honors teaching excellence across disciplines and schools. On February 17th, winners of the 2020-2021 DTA award will share strategies during a TeachTalk moderated by Vice Provost of Academic Affairs, Georgina Dopico. And, a new video series on teaching excellence launches this winter on the CFA website, and features 2019-2020 DTA Award winners.

An important series of workshops about inclusive teaching will be offered by the Office of Global Inclusion, Diversity, and Strategic Innovation from March 4 - April 1, 2022. The deadline to apply is February 6th.

This spring we are more than doubling our offering of Pedagogy Workshops. The first kicks off on February 8th, and focuses on backward design for in-person, online, and blended teaching. We also encourage you to reach out to our Teaching Support Services for individual consultations.

Visit the new webpage for CFA’s Immersive Technology Lab (iTLab), and learn how you might integrate virtual reality and extended reality into your teaching.

Congratulations to the 2020-2021 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Faculty Award winners, who will be honored during a special virtual ceremony on February 8th.

Faculty Leadership Development Opportunities for Department Chairs and Academic Deans begin on February 10th, and there are still a few openings including in the Equity Minded Leadership Institute. This workshop series examines how to lead from a position of influence to foster a culture of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

For more information on all of these programs, please see the newsletter below. Finally, we look forward to continuing to enhance your teaching experiences as we weather challenges and celebrate our successes together!

Sincerely,

Charlton McIlwain

NYU Courant Pathways to AI program

NYU Courant Institute is launching Pathways to AI, a summer 2022 program for first years and sophomores who plan to major in computer science, or other fields related to artificial intelligence (AI). The program is dedicated to expanding the field of scientists to include those historically underrepresented in AI, and changing the profile of the next generation of AI researchers. Students will attend mini-courses ranging from computational math to Big Ideas in AI. Those who successfully complete the program will be invited to work on a research project with a faculty member during the fall 2022 academic term. The application deadline is  March 15, 2022. FRN Faculty Well-Being Brain Trust

On February 11, 2022, at noon, the FRN will continue to host a monthly, virtual, “brain trust” for all faculty to connect, listen, and support each other through the ongoing challenges of teaching during the pandemic. Sessions will offer an opportunity for crowd-sourcing and community-building by engaging in the act of deep listening as we share practices as well as thoughts and feelings about our roles. This third session will be led by Dr. Rosalie Richards, Associate Provost for Faculty Development, Stetson University. Register to participate or Apply to lead a future session on a second Friday of the month at noon EST.

Professional Development & Other Resources
Immersive Technology (iTLab) Consultations

The CFA offers remote and in-person introductions to virtual reality (VR) through the iTLab. Faculty may request and receive instructional workshops in VR hardware and software, presentations, and expert guidance regarding best practices when working with immersive technologies. To learn more or request a consultation, please contact facultyadvance@nyu.edu.
Faculty Leadership Development Opportunities

As part of the CFA’s continued partnership with Academic Impressions, we are pleased to offer faculty, department chairs, and associate deans new leadership development opportunities. Please visit our Faculty Leadership Development webpage to learn more about these opportunities and see the spring 2022 Leadership Development Workshop offerings, which include Chair Leadership, Equity Minded Leadership, and Faculty Leadership at All Levels.
TeachTalks

This spring 2022, TeachTalks continue to explore the theme: Adapting to Change, Reflecting on Practice. How has the last year and a half prompted us to rethink how we teach, learn, and assess these practices? We’ll hear from a student panel in addition to our usual faculty facilitators, and consider such topics as contract grading as a way of reassessing practices too long taken for granted. And as a follow-up to our 2019-2020 Distinguished Teaching Award (DTA) winner panel in the fall, we’re thrilled to host a panel of 2020-2021 DTA recipients this spring.
Pedagogy Workshops

After the success of our Pedagogy Workshops series last fall, we’re more than doubling our workshop offerings for the spring to cover every aspect of teaching—from planning through practice and assessment. Join the CFA’s pedagogy and instructional design experts to learn about Backward Design, Inclusive Teaching, Assessment for Learning, Student Engagement, and more.
Teaching Support Services

If you’re looking for support to design your course, stimulate student engagement, adapt to new digital tools, or other teaching challenges, we encourage you to request a consultation with CFA’s team of educational designers. Our services support both new and experienced faculty, and include classroom observation and other feedback techniques to enhance your teaching experience.
