A Sign of Spring

Often one of the first spring flowers to appear is the annual or biennial Indian Paintbrush (Castilleja indivisa). It's often found blooming along with bluebonnets, though not as abundant. Paintbrush species are considered somewhat parasitic because their roots will tap into the roots of other plants, frequently grasses, to obtain a portion of their nutrients.
