Journal of Law and Religion

Volume 36, Issue 3  | December 2021

Free to read until March 1, 2022

This issue of the Journal of Law and Religion features two important new articles on pressing issues of our day. David Little’s article, “The Right of Self-Defense and the Organic Unity of Human Rights,” offers a new justification and organizing principle for universal human rights in the principle of self-defense, and Little defends this organic unity of human rights, in part, by appeal to the use of self-defense across religious and philosophical traditions. In their article, “Pre-Modern Insights for Post-Modern Privacy: Jewish Law Lessons for the Big Data Age,” Kenneth Bamberger and Ariel Mayse address the increasingly difficult and fraught question of privacy in a digital world. Drawing from the insights of Jewish law, they offer new alternatives for thinking about privacy and its preservation in the twenty-first century. In addition to these articles, this issue features a book review symposium on Robert Yelle’s Sovereignty and the Sacred. Essays from Richard Amesbury, William Cavanaugh, Winnifred Sullivan, Joseph David, and John Haskell interrogate and build on Yelle’s work to ask whether religion, religious history, and theology can offer an “exit ramp” from Weber’s iron cage of modernity. Enjoy the new issue and, as always, you can find the latest articles, essays, and book reviews on our FirstView page.

We hope you enjoy this new issue of JLR.
