Seacliff, Seacliff Park, Marino, Kingston Park
Hi <<First Name>>,

Welcome to the first 5049 Coastal Community Association e-newsletter for 2022
New planning rules create local eyesore!!
Urgent - join the protest
Saturday February 5th at 11am
53c Wheatland Street, Seacliff

You might ask "How could this be approved?"

The answer is, the State Government now has an online process which allows for approval without any local Council or community right to appeal - if the development is 'deemed to comply' - that is, meets certain criteria.

This ugly shed development is proof that this approval process is flawed.

Your association, along with Community Alliance SA, and many local Councils have been lobbying for changes to the rules, so that this can't happen in the future.

Come and support our protest, and lend your voice to our campaign.

See our website for background on the planning legislation.
Congratulations to the
Seacliff Railcare Group

Congratulations to Kate Ellis and the members of the Seacliff Railcare Group for receiving the Active Citizenship of the Year Award on Australia Day from the City of Holdfast Bay Council.

The group was started by Kate and David Cruickshanks-Boyd a few years ago, and has now grown to 10-15 people, who meet monthly on a Saturday morning to improve the look of the two Seacliff Railway Station platforms and associated gardens.  Followed by morning tea.

This group is part of a wider movement in 5049 including some excellent work by Rail Care volunteers at Marino Rocks station.

Feel free to join them at the next working bee on Saturday 12th February, at 9am.

Join one of our Focus Groups

Help us to communicate

The Association is conducting two well-structured sessions of small focus groups (up to 14 people in each group) for up to 2 hours – one on Thursday 24th February at 7pm in the evening and one on Saturday 26th February at 2pm in the afternoon.

We are seeking volunteers to join one of the focus groups to contribute to reviewing how the Association communicates with its many members and residents.

The focus groups will be professionally conducted at the Seacliff Surf Life Saving Club, in pleasant surroundings and we hope will be fun as well as informative.  All participants will receive acknowledgement and a modest gift.

Can you help?  Please email Liz Sadler if you can.

Thanks

Neighbour Day Event - McConnell Reserve

SAVE THE DATE - SUNDAY 27th MARCH PM

Our Kind Neighbour Task Group, together with the Friends of McConnell Reserve, will be holding our second National Neighbour Day Event at the beautiful McConnell Reserve, which has now had a significant upgrade to the eastern side - thank you Marion Council.

Come and see the improvements, and enjoy an afternoon at one of the area's most beautiful reserves.  And join the campaign to prevent the sale of the western side.

The basketball ring, netball ring and scooter track are all superb and well used.  The east /west orientation of the tennis court is unfortunate, but the new court surface is welcome.

Thank you to the nearby neighbours who regularly maintain and look after the reserve!!

Remember, save the date - Sunday 27th March PM

Kind Neighbour Activities

Our Kind Neighbour Task Group has been active over the Christmas and New Year break applying for funds to construct a purpose-built mobile catering facility which can be used to support local Kind Neighbour activities, and be used by our numerous community groups in the area.  We have been invited to put in a formal submission to the federal government, and we are hopeful that we will hear positive news in the next few months.

5049 Dark Sky Initiative

In 2021 a 5049 community member visited the International Dark Sky Reserve at Swan Reach (see: https://www.rivermurraydarkskyreserve.org) to hear a presentation by Dr Chris Tugwell about the many benefits of reducing light pollution. As a result and with Dr Tugwell’s encouragement, a “5049 Dark Sky Group” is being formed.

They are compiling data on street light globes and coverings, plus current native nocturnal fauna (microbats, owls, insects…), and  will apply for a grant from Green Adelaide to retrofit street light coverings and globes to greatly reduce the light pollution in our neighbourhood. We hope this will become a “Pilot Project” in Kingston Park and Seacliff ,enhancing Adelaide’s new “National Park City” status and eventually benefitting the whole city.

They hope to achieve better, less intrusive lighting for humans, reduced impact on nocturnal creatures and maybe even get to see the stars better!

It would be a great opportunity with the City of Holdfast Bay's Masterplan for Kingston Park Reserve, for this to become a Dark Sky Reserve

If you are interested in getting involved in the group please contact Dean.

Holdfast Bay Council 5049 Seaclif Plaza & Kingston Park Reserve
We are still awaiting information on the final design for the Seacliff Plaza project including the new toilets and changing facilities at Seacliff.  Unfortunately Council is still seeking further information before giving the green light to public consultation.

We are also looking forward to seeing the progress next year on:
  • Assisting Council with Seacliff Plaza Masterplan public consultation
  • Assisting Council and Seller Door with the communications around the new Café at Kingston Park
  • Assisting Council on the consultation on the Kingston Park Master Plan
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Council for their continued collaboration on issues of community interest.

Marion Council 5049 activities

McConnell Avenue Reserve
The upgrade of the eastern side of McConnell Reserve has been completed. Please check it out it looks great see map here

There is still much community support to also retain the western side of the Reserve, A decision on the future of this section will be made this year when the new improvements have been evaluated by council.

The 5049 Coastal Community Association is continuing to work with the Friends of McConnell Reserve and advocate to Marion Council for retention of the whole reserve.

Coastal Walkway
The updated detailed designs for the coastal walkway are are online at Making Marion. This includes images of the new suspension bridges, which are seen by Council as the most environmentally friendly and cost effective solution to gully travers. We are aware that not everyone will be happy, but we need to get this amazing State asset back in operation.

We are pleased to see Councillor Tim Gard back in circulation and active on behalf of the community.

The Seller Door, founded by brothers Tom and Ben Rodger, is a well-established cafe located on Jetty Road, Brighton.

The concept of The Seller Door has grown from a passion for South Australian produce and the stories that provide an insight into some incredible local producers in our State.

The family-operated business opened in 2016 and in that time has built a reputation for its community focus, quality, healthy and nutritious food offerings and promotion of eco-friendly practices.

The Rodger brothers were the successful tenderers for the proposed new kiosk at Kingston Park. They have a good local knowledge as residents and business owners within the City of Holdfast Bay.

The Seller Door’s proposal for Kingston Park is for a sustainable kiosk that showcases and promotes eco-friendly practices that service the local community of Kingston Park and surrounding areas.
