A Short Sock History Lesson
The first pair of socks created during the ancient civilizations were nothing like the socks we are familiar with today. The fabrics and fit were completely different from the soft socks we know.
So, when were socks invented? We're not sure, but their beginnings could be in Greece or Egypt. The earliest known surviving pair of socks are depicted in the far right photo above (red pair). These were made by Egyptians. The split toes were for using these socks with sandals! In Ancient Greece during the 8th century BC, a type of socks known as piloi were made out of matted animal hair. The Romans wrapped their feet in animal skins and tied it around their ankles. It wasn’t until the 2nd century that animal skin was more commonly traded in for knitted fabrics.
And that's your sock history lesson for the day! : )
Peace!
