Online master’s degree in public health caters to ‘growing’ pandemic demands
Application deadline extended for new online master’s degree in public health
The COVID-19 pandemic has magnified the importance of public health in Hawaiʻi, creating an uptick in demand from professionals of diverse backgrounds to change or upgrade their careers, and community leaders looking to fill critical positions. The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has responded to that need with its new online Master of Public Health (MPH) with a specialization in health policy and management. Health policy and management is a diverse specialization that will prepare graduates for careers across the health services continuum––from policy development, program planning, implementation and management, program and policy evaluation, and health systems leadership to achieve intended health outcomes and address health challenges in the state of Hawaiʻi, the Asia-Pacific region and around the world.
The application deadline has been extended with a priority deadline of March 1, for candidates interested in enrolling in the program’s inaugural fall 2022 semester. Apply here.

“There has been a growing demand in the community for public health jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Tetine Sentell, interim dean of the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health. “From professionals already in the health sector looking to improve their skills and credentials, to those wanting to pivot to a new job and serve their communities, to those who have always wanted to attain a master’s degree but had no time due to other priorities, this degree was created for you.”
Online degree provides option for busy professionals
Geared for busy professionals, the degree offered through the Office of Public Health Studies via the Outreach College is a new pathway to an MPH, and can be completed in as little as 21 months. Asynchronous classes offered online allow for flexible, year-round learning, and enables students to pursue a master’s degree at their own pace. Breaks are also built into the program calendar so students can take time needed away from coursework.
“Twenty years ago, I was both a full-time student in public health at UH Mānoa and a physician in Kalihi. The mixture of work and study was so rewarding, and I would highly recommend it!" said MPH alumnus David Derauf, who serves as executive director of Kōkua Kalihi Valley and is a member of the Thompson School dean's advisory council. “The option to attend online with asynchronous classes makes doing so much more in reach of those who already have a career.”
Flexibility for students near and far
Associate Professor Elizabeth McFarlane, online MPH program director, said the new degree also benefits many prospective students to attend classes at UH Mānoa.
“Because it’s offered online, those on the neighbor islands, the U.S. mainland, and Guam, American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, the Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of Palau and the Republic of the Marshall Islands can earn their degree from UH Mānoa, in most part, from the comfort of their own homes.”

The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health along with the Hawaiʻi Pacific Foundation presents our first session of the Spring 2022 Ke Aʻo Mau, Learning Preserved, community lecture series. The series is focused on Native Hawaiian knowledge, practice, and principles related to social justice and health.
Dr. Osorio is a professor and Dean of Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge. He received his PhD in History from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. At Kamakūokalani Center for Hawaiian studies, he has developed and taught classes in history, literature, law as culture, music as historical texts, and research methodologies for and from indigenous peoples. He is also a composer and singer and has been a Hawaiian music recording artist since 1975.

Join an Opioid Overdose Prevention Training
with Lee Ongais from Hawai'i Health & Harm Reduction Center
As part of Prevention, Recovery, and Treatment month, the Department of Social Work has organized a series of Zoom trainings to educate and build skills in helping community members who struggle with substance use issues. Narcan is a medicine that can be used to rapidly reverse an opioid overdose. We hope you will join us for a training in how to use Narcan so that we are all prepared to save a life should the need ever arise. All faculty, staff, and students are welcome to attend, and feel free to share with your networks.

2022 Untold Stories of Global Health Competition
Do you know an important global health story that’s been overlooked by the media and deserves special notice?
The Consortium of Universities for Global Health (CUGH) and Global Health NOW from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health are pleased to announce the Untold Global Health Stories of 2022 Contest. The contest is designed to give a platform to important but under-reported global health stories.
This competition is designed to shine a light on important but underreported global health issues. The best nominations focus on a specific issue in a specific location or region that has a powerful impact, good or bad, on people’s wellbeing. Topics can cover issues ranging from infectious to chronic diseases; mental health to public health; human rights to climate change, complex emergencies and beyond. Please use short, powerful, prose in your submission and include available data and evidence as well as contact information.

Call for Papers and Panel Proposals: The 18th East Asian Social Policy Research Network Conference

The East Asian Social Policy (EASP) Research Network is looking for abstracts and panel proposals for their annual conference. The conference aims to evaluate the social policy efforts of East Asian countries during COVID-19 and discuss how to restructure the welfare state
Those wishing to present a paper should submit an abstract of between 200 and 300 words. Information enclosed with any abstract should include: stream number, title of paper; author name(s); affiliation(s); and email address of one corresponding author.
Those wishing to organise a panel should submit a panel proposal. Information enclosed with any panel proposal should include: title of panel; objective of panel (between 200 and 300 words); names and affiliations of all panel organiser(s) and participating members; along with abstracts of three or four papers (between 200 and 300 words each); an e-mail address of one corresponding panel organiser.
Submissions for the 18th annual EASP conference should be sent to easp2022@gmail.com. The deadline for abstracts and panel proposals is Friday, March 11, 2022. The online conference will be held on Friday and Saturday, June 24-25.
