Welcome to my first issue of VNews; I look forward to working with you this year to grow and strengthen the volunteering ecosystem in the Northern Territory and South Australia.
Although I am just three weeks into the role of CEO of Volunteering SA&NT, I have already had some wonderful opportunities to get to see the passion, commitment and tireless dedication shown by volunteers across the State.
This year is an exciting one as we celebrate our 40th anniversary. We will be sharing exciting achievements and acknowledging our members and the wider volunteering community.
Right now however, the pandemic continues to have an effect on volunteering numbers with organisations needing more volunteers. Our team is working closely with many of these organisations to ascertain the most urgent areas of need and to offer support in creating diverse and more flexible volunteering opportunities.
A big shout out to all the volunteers recognised in our Australia Day Honours – a wonderful recognition of some amazing people.
Finally we are seeking an experienced Communications and Administration Officer in the Darwin office. If this is you or you know of somebody, we would really like to hear from you. Please see link below for more details.
Until next time, thanks for your ongoing support.
Hamilton Calder
Chief Executive Officer

COVID-19 RESEARCH
Volunteering Australia’s latest research paper ‘Continuity & change: volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic’ shows there is more to the experience of volunteers than the figures capture. One key finding was the diversity of the volunteering experience - the wellbeing benefits of volunteering, the advantages and challenges of remote volunteering and the changes in volunteer engagement.

COVID-19 RESOURCES
Volunteer involving organisations can access a wide range of information on volunteering during the COVID-19 pandemic including fact sheets, webinars and links to other helpful resources. These can be downloaded free from the Volunteering SA&NT website and include topics such as wellbeing, risk assessment and links to the Justice Connect website.

AUSTRALIA DAY HONOURS
Congratulations to all the amazing Northern Territorians recognised last week in the Australia Day 2022 Honours List. A big shout out to Seth Dugdell, NTPFES (Volunteering NT member organisation) for being awarded the Emergency Services Medal. Mr Dugdell has been managing NTES volunteers across the Top End for ten years and started volunteering as a teenager.

ACNC CHANGES
Last year the Senate rejected Government regulations which would have silenced Australian charities. Backing charities in disallowing proposed ACNC changes was a huge win for the Hands Off Our Charities (HOCC) ensuring charitable advocacy continues. It takes away the power of the Charities Commissioner to shut down a charity for advocating on vital social issues.
