Focus on workers’ mental health

Want happier employees? Do these four things

Workers quit their jobs in record numbers over the past year. While people give many different reasons for leaving — from pandemic worries to better pay — workplace stress and mental health are leading factors.

Chronic stress costs businesses billions of dollars a year in lower productivity, increased absenteeism, and higher medical bills. One way employers can help is by supporting mental well-being. Examples include offering flexible schedules, setting clear expectations, and keeping communication lines open so people don’t take on too much.

When employees feel safe and valued, they’re better able to weather job stresses — and more likely to stay. Here are four ways to promote well-being in the workplace:

  • Foster a sense of inclusion: By honoring individual differences, leaders can help employees feel involved.
  • Create a safe learning environment: When workers aren’t worried they’ll be judged or punished, they’re more willing to give and receive feedback, ask questions, make mistakes, and grow.
  • Encourage employees to share ideas: Providing opportunities to contribute, while giving appropriate direction, builds confidence.
  • Challenge the status quo: Accepting and encouraging candid feedback can result in greater employee engagement, happiness, and creativity.
