Happy LGBTQ+ History Month

Hello to all of our lovely subscribers and a very happy
LGBTQ+ History Month to you all!

This month can come with a whirlwind of emotions for queer people: Pride at how far we've come and the amazing community we are. Sorrow as we reflect on what it's taken to get here, and how much fight we have left to go. Frustration at those who only acknowledge us when it can be capitalised on.

However you're feeling this month, take time for self-care and do something that makes you feel good. Whether that's celebrating with your queer friends or curling up under a blanket with a good book (I recently read One Last Stop by Casey McQuiston and it may now be my favourite book of all time. Time-travelling 1970's lesbian and modern day spunky bisexual falling in love on the New York City subway? Yes please.)

COVID-19 Mental Health Survey

The National LGBT Partnership are conducting research into how LGBTQ+ people's mental health was affected during the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions in 2021. We are asking people to contribute to our survey which focuses on the period last year where restrictions were almost entirely eased (July 2021 - November 2021).

If you are:
  • LGBTQIA+
  • 18+
  • Living in England
we would love to hear from you and by contributing to the survey you can enter into a prize draw to win a £100 Love2shop voucher.

We welcome all contributions from those who fit the criteria however we are particularly interested in hearing from members of the LGBTQ+ community who are people of colour and/or aged 50+ as these communities are currently underrepresented in our research.

You can complete the 10-minute survey here.

Becoming Allies in Social Work: Understanding Intersectionality

The National LGBT Partnership are proud to have teamed up with BASW again to produce a second training session for social workers and social work students after our initial training — "Becoming Allies in Social Work: Understanding LGBTQIA+ Inequalities" — was such a success. This new interactive training session will focus on understanding intersectionality and will take place on Tuesday 22nd February, 10am-11:30am and be delivered via Zoom.

Learning Outcomes

After attending this session, participants will have an understanding of:

• The origin and definition of the term “intersectionality”
•  How LGBTQIA+ people who hold multiple marginalised identities (women, people of colour, disabled people, older people, young people) may experience discrimination
•  How they, as a social worker, can begin to consider all aspects of one's identity and use this information to provide the most inclusive service possible

Welcome Live Through This!

The National LGBT Partnership are thrilled to welcome Live Through This to our consortium of wonderful LGBTQIA+ voluntary organisations. We are now a partnership of 38 organisations and are striving to work collaboratively on everything we do to ensure that intersectionality is at the heart of our work. To view all of the charities that make up our partnership click here.

Live Through This is a cancer support and advocacy charity for the LGBTQIA+ community. Cancer can affect anyone but until now, the queer community has gone largely underrepresented and Live Through This want to change that. They provide a safe space for anybody who identifies as part of the queer spectrum and has had an experience with any kind of cancer at any stage from testing, diagnosis, treatment, remission to long term care.

Cervical Screening

The Department of Health and Social Care, with support from the NHS, are launching a new campaign to help drive cervical screening attendance amongst all eligible individuals with a cervix.

To help encourage people to attend their screening, they’re looking for people with a positive screening experience who are open to sharing their story with the media. They are looking for individuals aged 25 to 64 who attended their screening when invited and their results showed abnormal cells but they underwent successful treatment. If this is you, contact cervicalscreening@freuds.com for more information on how to take part.

LGBT+ Women & Non-Binary Network
February 16th • 12:00pm - 1:30pm • FREE

This is an open and inclusive network for all women and non-binary people working or volunteering in the LGBT+ sector, who would like to join a supportive and welcoming environment to share insights, network, and discuss the challenges and opportunities they experience within the sector and beyond. As it is LGBT+ History Month, this February meeting will provide an opportunity to remember important figures in our history, as well as giving space for conversation, support, reflection and connection.

Love is Love: Let’s Talk About Consent
February 19th • 5pm - 7pm • FREE
As part of LGBT History Month, Hidayah LGBT is hosting a series of events called ‘Love is Love’, focusing on love and intimacy and how queer Muslims experience this. Our event is focused on the importance of consent in sexual relationships. Consent is central to having a healthy relationship, and our very own Deenah al-Aqsa (journalist, activist and Hidayah's Programmes Officer) will be breaking it down in a Q&A with Makenzie Marts. Makenzie is a queer sex educator who advocates for inclusivity and openness in sex education.

Race, ethnicity and LGBT+ identities: Chinese bodies in sport
February 23rd • 12pm - 1pm • FREE
This talk is based on Dr Bonnie Pang’s latest article on Trans*, Female Bodybuilding, and Racial Equality published in Sport, Education, and Society. Transgender and sport have received limited coverage in the literature on gender and sexualities and even less when they intersect with race and ethnicity. In this talk, Bonnie will problematise how professional women bodybuilders are being constructed as objects that are expected to embody Whiteness and “authentic heightened femininity”.

Resources

Don't forget that the Partnership's website has an array of publications available for download covering a diverse range of LGBT health issues. As we navigate through the pandemic and beyond it is important to reflect on the lived experiences of LGBT people and communities as we rebuild new ways of working and explore the additional impacts on vulnerable and marginalised communities.
