Shortage of livestock vaccines in South Africa a cause for alarm

Most vaccines to protect South African livestock from disease are produced at a state-owned enterprise, Onderstepoort Biological Products (OBP).

According to an article by the Daily Maverick, industry sources and leading vets say there is a critical shortage of many of these vaccines and point to governance issues at OBP. The OBP Board says it inherited a mess, but has a plan to upgrade production facilities that it says were not properly maintained in the past.

Cow noses unlock facial recognition technology

Many of us are used to using our fingerprint to unlock our phones, and soon something similar could take place in the cattle yards.

Researchers say a cow's muzzle is just like its very own fingerprint and as a result they, too, will be able to enter the world of facial recognition.

Beware of consuming too little meat

Australian-specific research is showing the climate benefits of reducing red meat consumption below amounts recommended in dietary guidelines is small and could create negative environmental trade-offs such as higher water scarcity.

The industry's big service provider Meat & Livestock Australia has released a fascinating report on the topic, which draws extensively from research conducted by CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) and other institutions.

Study tells why saturated fat is good for you

Dr. Paul Saladino and science journalist and author Nina Teicholz — who is also executive director of The Nutrition Coalition — review the evidence against chicken, and why saturated fat really qualifies as a health food.

According to Dr Saladino (the leading authority on the carnivore diet and best-selling author of The Carnivore Code), while consumption of red meat is on the decline, thanks to the vilification of red meat and saturated fat, people are eating more and more chicken.

If readers are interested they can contact me for more detailed information.

Measuring medicine use in livestock helps against antimicrobial resistance

Measuring how much antimicrobial medication is given to food animals is key to understanding how to slow antimicrobial resistance, when dangerous microbes get so used to antimicrobials that they evolve stronger defences against them.

However, measuring the actual antimicrobial use in animals on a large scale is still a logistical challenge. Because data on antimicrobial sales for use in food animals are easier to obtain, they are frequently used at the national levels as proxies for antimicrobial use. Scientists at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine analysed four different measurement methods used across the globe.

Less methane levels a distinct possibility

The climate change impact of cattle rearing is typically much worse than other livestock agriculture due to the high methane emissions from the animal’s digestive system.

But new research has found that some beef cattle can produce up to 30% less methane emissions, on average, for the same level of productivity.

Beef market trends

Higher demand from consumers resulted in beef producer prices to trend upward during December 2021, according to AMT.

Weaner prices also stayed on a higher level with late purchases from feedlots that supported demand while availability is also very limited. Slaughter prices can stay on a higher level over the next two months, but weaner prices can trend downward due to lower demand.

Sheep market trends

Higher demand towards the end of the 2021 support the lamb and sheep slaughter prices, according to AMT.

Lamb prices also increased on the back of lower supplies, but we can expect these prices to decrease as demand is likely to be very limited over December.
