The Rwanda NCD Alliance co-hosted Rwanda's first-ever National NCD Conference under the theme "Multisectoral Collaboration for NCDs and UHC." It took place on 25 and 26 November 2021 in Kigali, Rwanda. The conference provided a platform for the launch of two major documents, such as the National Strategy and Costed Action Plan for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in Rwanda 2020-2025 and the Rwanda Advocacy Agenda of People Living with NCDs.

At its Annual General Meeting held on 10th November 2021 in Arusha-Tanzania, the NCD Alliance East Africa Board of Directors elected Prof. Joseph MUCUMBITSI as President.

Prof. Mucumbitsi has been involved in different national and international research projects on cardiovascular diseases, congenital heart disease, and RHD prevention, screening, and surgical outcomes.

NCDs awareness at the workplace - TOYOTA among the leads in Rwanda

In order to promote a healthy lifestyle among the workforce at their respective workplaces, on November 10, 2021, we held an awareness event on healthy lifestyles and nutrition, mental health in the workplace, and NCDs screening (body mass index, blood pressure, glycemia, and waist circumference) at TOYOTA-Rwanda.

More than 50 TOYOTA-Rwanda staff and employees were screened for NCDs and provided health advice on fostering healthy lifestyles at work and home.

The Diabetes Walk: Rwandans Warned on the diet, physical exercises, tobacco, and alcohol

On 14th November 2021, Rwanda NCD Alliance joined the rest of the world to mark World Diabetes Day under the theme: “Access to Diabetes Care.”
The day was commemorated by the Global Diabetes Walk, an annual global diabetes awareness-raising campaign held in November. The Global Diabetes Walk was established by the World Diabetes Foundation (WDF)  to celebrate World Diabetes Day.

The World Diabetes Foundation acknowledged and awarded the Rwanda NCD Alliance for participating in the Global Diabetes Walk 2021.

Rwanda NCD Alliance nominated Paladie KAMPUHWE MATEGEKO and Joseph RUKELIBUGA to participate in the Our Views, Our Voices training, which took place from November 15 to November 26, 2021, to equip them with knowledge, confidence, and skills to share their lived experiences publicly and call for action on NCDs, such as improving access and availability of NCD treatment, support, and care, accelerating prevention strategies, and meaningfully involving people living with NCDs in decision-making.

Perceived impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on young adults with type 1 diabetes in Rwanda

The challenges associated with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) self-management have drastically increased since COVID19 was declared a pandemic. A study was undertaken in Kigali to investigate and describe the problems and challenges experienced by young adult patients with T1D resulting from the early phase of the COVID19 pandemic.

The study aimed to understand the mechanisms used by young people with T1D and their healthcare providers to overcome challenges and understand their perceived needs for support.

Slim and Fit Program: A Promising Weight Loss Journey

Through Mission Slim and Fit, Obese and overweight women in Rwanda took the lead and started a weight loss program. Obese and overweight women participate in sports and health education and counselling on a healthy diet and other behavioural changes that benefit weight loss.

The Mission Slim and Fit program is broadcasted on Rwanda Television (RTV) every Saturday 3:30 p.m. - 3:55 p.m. and every Tuesday 9:30 a.m. - 9:55 a.m. under the collaboration of Care for Them and Wellness Organization and the Rwanda Broadcast Agency (RBA).

Club Ngwino Nawe is the driving force behind the promotion of sports for older people.

Club Ngwino Nawe was founded on May 14, 2014, to raise awareness among the general population about the importance of sports for long-term health, focusing on older people.
Members of the Club Ngwino Nawe were able to prevent or take care of Age-Related Diseases such as high blood pressure, rheumatism, diabetes, and others. Club has made it easier for every member to make positive changes in their lives. They are no longer afraid of the waves of laughter that discourage them because they understand the secret of living a healthy life.

To date, Club has two branches (Remera and Kacyiru in GASABO District) and aspires to scale up the initiative in all districts of the city of Kigali as well as countrywide.
