Enjoying the lower 48 for a bit longer

Winter seems to have come and gone down here in Bellingham, but we were able to enjoy some snow time. Sailboat BOB is getting some love and life is good.

Summer is filling fast

The schedule is really tightening up for this season and we are thrilled! Thank you to everyone coming aboard in 2022. There are a couple of trips (and single cabins) open, but not many. Hurry and book if you've been thinking about it! We have a prime August 15-22 trip open to explore Admiralty Island, known by the Tlingit as "Kootznoowoo -the Fortress of the Bears", Baranof Warm Springs, and the fun towns of Petersburg and Juneau.

We are excited to say the upgrades to BOB are coming along. Lots to do, but the warmer weather has attracted workmen to the BOB like bees to honeysuckle and things are getting done. Guests this year can look forward to a shinier more comfortable BOB and SKIP.
Things slow down in the boat yard when it snows here, so we waxed up the skis and took a little holiday to Eastern Washington for some fun in the snow. The trail system in the Winthrop Valley is wonderful. It really reminds us of the Alps as you ski through hay fields and past cows and barns. Something for everyone with snowshoe, bike, and ski trails groomed nightly. Really a treat.

When Monique isn't modeling the latest in ski fashion, she is helping the birds out. Working with one our favorite charities for several years - the Alaska Raptor Center in Sitka - she is busy leading a master plan process for them into 2040. We are sure Volta the eagle is happy to hear he will be getting a new home soon.

UPDATE ON "OUR" WHALE

...And speaking of healping the wildlife, last summer we submitted a bunch of photos of whale tails and orca fins to Happy Whale, and we are always thrilled to get them identified. One whale in Chatham Strait had not been encountered before and was new to science!

Currently identified as "HW-MN0401298" he/she has his/her own webpage!. We would love to "name" this whale to honor the incredible contributions of our friend and inspiring scientist Jan Straley of the University of Alaska Southeast. Jan, not surprisingly, also has her own website, and if you'd like to read some of her amazing research, take a look here

"Naming" a whale helps protect these majestic creatures. To do so, it takes a donation to whale conservation. We've had a few folks say "yes!" - so let us know if you would like to help. We will pool our resources and do some good.

Our little HW-MN0401298 showed up in Hawaii this winter and sure looks like it is enjoying some hauʻoli in the 50th state.
We are looking forward to a busy and fun summer back aboard, and hope you can join us soon!
Blain typically writes these updates - if you hadn't guessed. So sometime he gets to slip in a little something embarrassing on Monique. When we were dating we found out both had had a pet named "Spooky" and it is one reason we knew we were meant for each other (that and mustard on french-fries, but that's off-subject, isn't it?).

Anyway, my Spooky was a sweet loveable Cocker spaniel/Pekinese we had forever. Hers was a freakin' ring-tailed coatimundi from the jungles of Panama that they fed SpaghettiOs to and took to Alaska when her family was stationed there! She's been going through old photo albums at her dad's and mistakenly shared this with me. And just look at that adorable little future Admiral Monique!
