BMRG Weekly Bulletin

BMRG welcomed the potential greater positive impacts on the Great Barrier Reef that will be made possible through the Australian Government’s $1 billion additional funding over nine years announced last week. BMRG and its consortium partners have already delivered significant work to improve water quality in the region. Expanding this work would go a long way to achieving the Reef 2050 Water Quality Improvement Plan, and broader benefits for the Burnett Mary region.

Grazing resilience

The Grazing Resilience and Sustainable Solutions (GRASS) program is supporting graziers in the reef catchments of Burdekin, Fitzroy and Burnett Mary regions to improve poor or degraded land. Participating graziers have access to a range of resources and assistance. Our project officers recently visited property owners who have been keen to get involved with the project. The owners of this stunning property at Glastonbury are resting paddocks and allowing the land to recover, a great example of sustainable agriculture.

RCS Grazing Clinic

The RCS Grazing Clinic is a practical hands-on workshop that gives you the skills and knowledge to develop and implement strategies for profitable property planning and overall improved grazing management. In Murgon 5–7 April, the two-and-a-half-day clinic could help you improve your grass yield, reintegrate livestock into your cropping, and better manage your entire grazing system. The event is supported by Burnett Mary Regional Group, through funding from the Australian Government’s National Landcare Program.

Fox control work underway

Fox control work along the Woongarra Coast began this week as part of the Nest to Ocean turtle protection program. The introduced European red fox is one of the most destructive feral predators in the region posing significant threat to native wildlife.

Local wetland impact

BMRG acknowledged the vital support of landowners, partners and volunteers to work to protect and restore the ecological character of local wetlands on World Wetlands Day 2 February. Nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded since the 1700s, wetlands are being lost three times faster than forests. Find out more about our work in the Ramsar-listed Great Sandy Strait.
