Updates from the Toronto HIV/AIDS Network
for the Week of  February 2- February 8
February and Forever: Celebrating Black History today and every day.
THN adds our voice to partner and member organizations challenging ourselves and each other - individually, organizationally and societally – to honestly, deeply and with humility, escalate our efforts to dismantle anti-Black racism and the resulting health inequities. (I think this would be our core statement so perhaps bold or making it stand out in design?)

In our commitment towards dismantling anti-Black racism, we are appreciating the opportunity and importance of moving into 2022 building on activities in 2021 including:
  • Developing and incorporating language into key THN documents that articulates expectations towards addressing anti-Black racism as well as intentionally considering and identifying structural barriers and inherent power imbalances including processes that are rooted in white supremacy.
  • Identifying through Steering Committee discussions a process and interested member organization individuals to more deeply and concretely explore and build THN capacity in this work.
  • Aligning and creating synergy with other efforts in the sector towards achieving health equity, dismantling anti-Black, anti-Indigenous and other forms of racism and oppression.

We invite you to share programming and resources so that we can disseminate and promote to THN members. Please send information to brian@torontohivaidsnetwork.org

About the Ontario Accord and GIPA/MEPA
Created in 2011/12, The Ontario Accord is a set of principles and values that centre MEPA and GIPA (the meaningful engagement of people living with HIV/AIDS, and the greater involvement of people living with HIV /AIDS) in the work of Ontario’s HIV/AIDS sector.

The Ontario Accord on GIPA/MEPA, outlines six action points regarding the engagement of people living with HIV in the HIV/AIDS organizations that serve them.

A new Accord will be launched early in 2022.

Calls to Action

ACT is seeking community members interested in serving on its volunteer Board of Directors.

ACT works to reduce new HIV infections in Toronto and promotes the independence, dignity, health and well-being of people living with HIV and AIDS and those at increased risk of HIV. Founded in 1983 – as the AIDS Committee of Toronto, today ACT had grown to be Canada’s leading and largest HIV service organization.
ACT is committed to equity at all levels of the organization and has, as one of its core commitments, the greater and meaningful engagement of people living with HIV and AIDS. ACT encourages members of our priority populations – people living with HIV, cis and trans gay/bi/queer men, cis and trans women, cis and trans young people, members of diverse ethno-racial communities and members of Indigenous communities – to apply and self-identify.
ACT Board members commit to attend eight meetings in a year and are expected to participate in at least one board committee. These committees are Finance, Leadership and Governance, Philanthropy and Stewardship, and Pension. The monthly commitment for a board member can vary, but on an average is between 4-6 hours per month.
For more information or to receive an application package, please contact nbruno@actoronto.org or call Nicole Bruno at 416-340-8484 ext. 241

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
Friday, January 28, 2022.

COVID-19 Resources

Information about COVID-19 and People living with HIV

  • January 31, the Province of Ontario began to lift public health restrictions related to COVID-19 once more. Indoor dining, gyms, retailers, shopping malls, and cinemas can reopen at 50% capacity. Museums, galleries, aquariums, zoos, casinos, bingo halls and other gaming establishments can also reopen. Social gathering limits will increase to 10 people indoors and 25 people outdoors.

As a reminder, enhanced proof of vaccination and other requirements continue to apply in existing settings. This means ensuring that you’ve gotten your booster shot, and can demonstrate proof of vaccination with a QR code. If you’ve yet to download your vaccine certificate, you can do it on this Province of Ontario website.

This is a welcome change for small businesses who have been long-suffering and deeply impacted by rolling lockdowns. When you are shopping and dining in the coming weeks, I encourage you to consider shopping locally and supporting small businesses.
