Many successful and safe Lunar New Year Celebrations around town

February was a busy month for those celebrating the Lunar New Year. The New Year kicked off on February 1st, and wrapped up on the 15th with the Lantern Festival. The local Asian American communities hosted concerts, banquets, and other festivities to honor this special holiday – the Spring Festival (春節).

While the local Asian Americans celebrated the Year of Tiger, many also observed and practiced COVID-19 precautions by double masking or by wearing KN95 or even N95 masks. Since RED is the dominant color for the Lunar New Year, many our hosts gave out red colored medical masks to put on the outside of members’ own masks as the 2nd layer. So one not only saw all decorations in red, but people were also wearing red, and their faces covered in red as well.  Through Project HEALINGS, Asian Media Access also supported vaccination pop up clinics at the Vietnamese New Year Celebration (Jan. 22 – 23, 2022), Chinese New Year Celebration (Jan. 30th, 2022 Celebration), and Korean New Year Celebration (Feb 12, 2022).

Our Korean partner, Korean JangmiArts, was very creative and hosted a performance at a trendy brewery - Arbeiter Brewing Co. to introduce the Lunar New Year to a mainstream audience. On top of that, AMA helped them to set up a vaccination pop up clinic.  It was so fun, so community-focused to get young adults vaccinated, one just have to love the flexibility of our vaccination clinic, the willingness of the brewery owners, as well as a Korean cultural group reaching out to Caucasian young adults. It made us proud of how we all can take on a BRIDGE ROLE to help reduce the COVID transmission.

And finally, we are happy to report that the Kahoot Game sponsored by the MN Orchestra in inviting audience to vote for a winner among 6 Tiger sculpture paintings. The tiger from the Whole Foods design was the top vote getter.   Drawing from the Water Tiger’s strength and courage, Whole Foods Market captures this spirit of new beginnings in their Horizon Tiger to strive for growth and flourish together for a prosperous new year.

Updates from the Metro Blue Line Extension

The Metropolitan Council and Hennepin County have partnered to evaluate revised route options that do not use freight rail property as previously planned for the METRO Blue Line Extension at Brooklyn Park; Crystal/Robbinsdale; and Minneapolis (two route options are being evaluated‑–one along Lowry and Washington Avenues and one along West Broadway Avenue).

Since March 2021, Asian Media Access and other CBOs have worked with project staff to support a robust community engagement process, and hosting activities prioritizing and supporting low-income communities, communities of color, and specific areas of the transit corridor.

Major themes have emerged as:
• Avoid impacts/disruption to communities and the environment
• Safety on transit and in communities served
• Easy pedestrian access to/from stations
• Anti-displacement efforts are a priority
• Support for businesses during construction
• Access to regional destinations
• Support economic development
• Improve the transit experience
• Improve access/serve transit dependent populations

Later, each route has been evaluated based on its ability to meet project goals. All the routes have received an overall assessment of “good” in their ability to serve the community. In some cases these routes achieve an excellent rating based on unique features and the potential to deliver exemplary positive benefits. None of the routes have been assessed as “poor,” which would mean they did not meet the project goals. See the chart below:

Now is the time to give comments to shape the final route recommendations. Please share your comments, questions and concerns on the interactive feedback map - www.BlueLineExt.org, and for more information, please contact project staff Sophia Ginis – Sophia.Ginis@metrotransit.org

AMA training members in combating COVID-19 Misinformation

If we look at the U.S. stats compared to the rest of the world, it is obvious something is wrong here.  We were the first to have mass availability of vaccines, yet 62.4 millions infected and over 841,000+ dead. The deadliest contagious disease in our country's history. Many of those death were preventable with vaccination. But even after a year of the vaccination effort, and nearly 533 Millions  Americans have received at least one dose, the myths and misinformation surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines still abound.

Some misinformation and threatening languages like below shared widely at social media:
•    COVID-19 is just like the common flu;
•    Natural Immunity Preferred;
•    Not Knowing Vaccine’s long term impacts;
•    The vaccination, alters the DNA, or impacts fertility;
•    Shaming of people who get vaccinated;
•    Providing alternative research data to indicate the unnecessary;
•    No matter what you say – it is my RIGHT to not get vaccinated; and
•    Attacking vaccination clinics with threatening languages.

At Project HEALINGS, many of our partners are at the frontline to combat these misinformation. Asian Media Access has offered a fresh perspective, instead of continuing dismissing or arguing about the misinformation, AMA encourages our partners to think about using “VALUE PROPOSITION” to give us the best chance and tools to convert prospects to get vaccines. Such uses of “VALUE PROPOSITION” links VALUES to prospects’ daily lives, addresses their needs and makes clear why they should change their behaviors and would benefit from vaccination.

AMA breaks it down in 5 major strategies:
•    Value Proposition #1 – Consideration – “Thanks, but here is the FACT……..” – provide correct information to replace the misinformation without arguments
•    Value Proposition #2 – Diversion – “Do you happen to know…. “ - providing another historical fact about vaccination, instead of focusing on dead-end arguments
•    Value Proposition #3 – Immersion – Providing Context and “WE ARE IN THIS TOGETHER………….”
•    Value Proposition #4 –  Progression - Emphasizing the Future – “better protect you, your children and family through vaccination….”
•    Value Proposition #5 –  Repetition - Like a broken record – repeating the messages again and again from different angles and channels  – Make correct information more memorable

Many Project HEALINGS partners have already practiced just that, for example: 1) Providing many accurate information, ex. an Infographic to show the death of flue vs. COVID; 2) empowering members to be the cultural influencers to share correct information; and 3) developing messages from diverse angles and channels to connect with anti-vaxxers to remind them the importance of vaccines and their collective role in human history.   Please join us at this critical time to share RIGHT INFO with GOOD ATTITUDE about vaccination.

Questions Answers
Q1: We've spoken to many people in our community who have decided not to get vaccinated because they feel protected by natural infection after recovering from COVID. What do we know about their protection level against COVID vs. someone who has been vaccinated? A1: It is an understanding that natural immunity can protect people, but the speed in gaining herd natural immunity cannot compete with the speed of the current virus spreading. At this urgent stage, we can’t wait, we need everyone to get vaccinated, and the VACCINE IS SAFE.

Q2: Can anyone explain why COVID treats individuals differently? I work at a nursing home and take care of a lady over 100 years old that had covid for a few weeks and didn't die from it, including most of the residents who had it and survived (a small amount died). A2: Because every person is unique in DNAs and physical features. That’s why every person shouldn’t gamble and every person needs a vaccine to protect and lower the risk of severe illness and even death.
Q3: Where can I find resources talking from these different angles  you just mention to mobilize others? A3: check our site – www.projecthealings.info and below sites for good examples:

Youth Discussion: Covid-19 Vaccination and Hesitancy

Mary Xiong from the Minnesota Department of Health joined Asian Media Access's Youth Forum to provide insights on Covid-19 vaccination and vaccination hesitancy. Eligibility and availability to receive the COVID-19 vaccination have been increasing, and with that, there has been some resistance or delayed acceptance on receiving the vaccination.

All youth who attended the youth discussion was of age to get the COVID-19 Vaccinations. In addition, many of the youth who attended were also interested in understanding the associated risks of vaccination as they were interested in studying or currently studying Public Health and related fields.

The youth brought up that there are so many incentives to drive individuals to get their vaccinations in the US when so many other parts of the world want just to have the option available to them. So why are people not willing to get vaccinated?

A majority of vaccine hesitancy is related to a lack of knowledge about costs, benefits, effectiveness, potential side effects, risks of being unvaccinated.

Costs:
All vaccination doses are free for all, even those without insurance or documentation.

Benefits:
Vaccines are a way to help lower the risk of individuals getting diseases such as the flu, chickenpox, and now COVID-19. Vaccines also help prevent the disease from spreading, keeping the community healthier and safe.

The COVID-19 vaccination mitigates the illness severity, including reducing the risk of hospitalization and death.

The vaccine works in all different ages, different racial and ethnic groups, and people with health conditions.

Effectiveness:
There is a lack of trust in the vaccine as it seems that the COVID-19 was created too quickly. However, all vaccines go through many phases of clinical study and review before they become available to the public. The development of the COVID-19 vaccine followed the same extensive process. No steps were skipped in the vaccination-making and approval process for the COVID-19 vaccine. Money from the federal government and partnerships helped the process go much faster than usual. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) made each vaccine manufacturer prove that its COVID-19 vaccine was safe and effective, just as they would for any other vaccine. Any future COVID-19 vaccines will need to go through all these same steps before being approved for use in the general population.

When public health officials realized that COVID-19 was becoming a pandemic, they collaborated with vaccine companies and experts to make an effective vaccine. The first COVID-19 vaccines came out within a year of the COVID-19 virus being discovered. In the United States, the goal was to make a vaccine that was safe and worked, as soon as they could, while still following all the safety guidelines.

Potential Side Effects:
The vaccines cannot make someone sick with the disease, but there can be side effects. The potential side effects that you experience after vaccinations means that the vaccine is working as it should. The side effects are expected and are temporary. Severe adverse reactions are rare. Some of the symptoms include a sore arm, mild fever, body aches, which indicate that your body’s natural response to fight off diseases is working as intended. In addition, these potential side effects usually last one to two days and typically do not interrupt daily activities.

Risks of being unvaccinated:
Being unvaccinated puts an individual at a higher risk of infection compared to those who are vaccinated. The world uses vaccines as they are one of the most effective prevention methods for disease onset for you and your community. There have been multiple diseases and worries about diseases that have been eliminated in the United States because of the effectiveness of vaccines. A person who does not get vaccinated does not have the body defense to fight against the diseases.

When the community gets completely vaccinated, this helps prevent spreading illness from person to person. This widespread vaccination is also known as herd immunity, which helps protect people in the population who are not immune and can get the disease. Therefore, the vaccine is crucial for yourself and those around you, including your loved ones.

IAM Small Business Initiative

The India Association of Minnesota interns have been working on the IAM Small Business Initiative. The goal of this project is to raise awareness of local Indian owned businesses in the Twin Cities area. As a growing community in Minnesota, we are proud to be a center point from which many organizations can gain following and support, and we wish to further our involvement in the success of our Indian businesses with the creation of an IAM Small Business directory on the IAM website. We started reaching out for registrations in June 2021 and are continuing the information gathering process. We want you to be a part of it.

This project requires businesses to provide some basic information. With this information, we will create a directory located conveniently on the IAM website from which all information, contacts, and links to business websites or social media can be found. This will allow regular IAM followers, as well as Indians, new to Minnesota, to locate the various businesses around the metro area which in turn will help your businesses grow.

Spread the word to all the Indian businesses you patronize to be a part of the IAM business directory. If you have any questions please direct them to smallbusinesses@iamn.org

Asian Minnesotan Day at the Capitol 2022

PLACE: 75 Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard., St Paul, MN 55155, Register https://secure.everyaction.com/u49yjH-_zUG2xCRfLpj_wg2

Join us for Asian Minnesotan Day at the Capitol featuring champions on CAAL policy priorities, advocacy education from CAAL staff and leaders, and an opportunity to speak with your legislator about issues impacting our communities. If health and safety allow, we will begin amplifying our voices with a rally at the MN Capitol. If we can't rally in person, we will come together virtually.

Our communities have a massive stake in the decisions that shape our cities, state, and country. We must prioritize legislation that protects and expands opportunities for Black, Indigenous, Asian, and Latinx communities. When CAAL leaders advocate for issues that impact them, they play an active role in shaping a just and joyful future for all Minnesotans to live with dignity in thriving and caring communities. Lawmakers prioritize the input of their constituents; this is why your voice is essential to you and the collective community at the Minnesota State Legislature!

Masks are currently required at the State Capitol. We encourage all in-person participants to get vaccinated and test frequently. If you are displaying any symptoms of COVID-19 including fever or cough, please do not come to the in-person portions of our schedule. Thank you!

Anti-Asian/American and xenophobic harassment are on the rise across the US -- and the world. In this virtual Zoom workshop sponsored by Asian Americans Advancing Justice | Chicago, CAIR Chicago, and Hollaback!, you'll learn how you can intervene effectively as a bystander without compromising your safety.

This 60-90 minute, interactive training will teach you Hollaback!'s 5D's of bystander intervention methodology. We'll start by talking about the types of discrimination that Asian and Asian American folks are facing right now - from microaggressions to violence. You'll then learn what to look for and the positive impact that bystander intervention has on individuals and communities.

We'll talk through five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct; and how to prioritize your own safety while intervening. At the end of our practice scenarios, and you'll leave feeling more confident intervening the next time you see Anti-Asian/American harassment.
