   UPCOMING THAMI MNYELE FOUNDATION RESIDENT

Black Hands, sculpture, video-intallation, Guy Woueté 2021

Guy Woueté, born in 1980 Cameroon. He is based in Antwerp and Douala.

He studied sculpture and painting in Douala and was a resident at the Thami Mnyele foundation in 2006 before attending the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam in 2009-2010. He graduated from the University of Paris 8 as well as from Erg, École de Recherche Graphique in Brussels, where he also teaches.

Woueté’s work always encompasses elements of social criticism, questions surrounding borders, migration and symbols of domination in an era of globalisation. Using history as a source of material, Woueté blends records of experience, emotion, feeling in collages, installation, performance, video and photographic work. He also works in sculpture, painting and makes artists’ books.

For our 30th anniversary publication, Woueté was interviewed by Aude Christel Mgba. Download the PDF here.

Guy Woueté will stay in the residency from 1 to 28 February 2022.

Performance En quête at the exhibition If Things Grow Wrong in Museum De Lakenhal
Photo: Taco van der Eb

Guy Woueté presents his Sit-in-Performance in the public spaces "En Quête" as part of the exhibition If Things Grow Wrong at Lakenhal Museum in Leiden. "En Quête" is an experiment that makes us think about work, the body and the public space as cornerstones for a more sustainable world. Why should we fill our lives with work? Why does our work determine our identity? Why are we so dependent on our job? And why do so many workplace abuses persist in our world – from grueling employment contracts to physical and mental exhaustion?
