Fungi in the Forest

Rachel Hallaway, Field Operations Assistant Manager and photographer at Stewards, sent over these beautiful photos of fungi found in Armstrong Redwoods.  The white fungi was found around the picnic area, and the yellow was found growing on trail fencing. Remember: Armstrong Redwoods is a reserve. Never take plants.  Take only photos.

Remembering Bill Bambrick
February 11, 2021

Dear Stewards,

The staff of Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods and its Board of Directors honor the memory of our colleague and friend Bill Bambrick. Bill passed on January 14th, 2022.

Bill first joined Stewards for a Whale Watch orientation in December of 2002, after leaving what he referred to as “cubicle hell” of Silicon Valley for the sylvan beauty of western Sonoma County. Without much success spotting whales, he joined the Armstrong Redwoods Trail Crew and eventually went on to lead the Sonoma Coast Trail Crew for over a decade.

Bill volunteered for just about every Stewards program, clocking in over 10,000 hours of service. He led Stewards as Board President for a decade, offering guidance and leadership. He was a mentor to many, a teacher of children who followed him to learn about watersheds and tidepools, and a great builder of infrastructure that serves millions of park visitors each year.

Bill’s avocation was the Sonoma Coast Trail Crew. He built a trusting relationship with California State Parks that was measured by how well the crew supported park operations. Under his leadership, the trail crew built and maintained countless miles of footbridges, trails, retaining walls, and did whatever needed to be done to keep the parks safe and resilient.

He leaves behind a legacy in our parks and with Stewards. He did it not for himself, but for his kids and grandkids, and yours. Join us in commemorating Bill's inspirational legacy.

“Bill exemplified amazing dedication to the State Parks he loved and to Stewards. As Executive Director, he offered me guidance and support while working in partnership with me as Board President. His selfless volunteerism inspired so many others who have become dedicated volunteers following in his large footsteps. He will be forever remembered and missed.” - Michele Luna, Executive Director Emeritus

"He was one of the most unselfish individuals I've ever had the honor to know. Describing who he was would take pages, and you still would remember something else he'd done. He volunteered for everything, and loved to share the experiences. He never claimed to know everything, but he was always there to do what needed to be done." - Scott Lawyer, Operations Manager

"The loss of Bill still resonates within and it is very hard to let go of the fact that he has moved on to a better place. We all will miss his human presence, however, his spirit lives within us. He gave so much and asked nothing in return. Truly a great person, mentor and friend. Volumes could be written on his accomplishment with Stewards alone." - Rich Lawton - Trail Crew

"One of my very first friends at Stewards, a kind gentle man with a quiet sense of humor who always made you feel better.  He is missed" - Hollis Bewley - Stewards Board Chair

This Weekend: Whales!

Point Arena folks have been consistently seeing about a dozen Gray Whales a day for past week. This is the very beginning of northbound migration when pregnant females head north to Alaska to feed.  Migration should pick up, with moms and calves seen close in from mid-April to May. Stewards' Whale Watch volunteers will be stations at Bodega Head this weekend. Join us! Photo credit: Left and center whale photos by Guy Mohr.

Stewards is seeking volunteer researchers for an upcoming project.  One role will be researching indigenous history of our local parks, and another will be researching the civilian Conservation Corps history of Armstrong Redwoods.  Sound like fun? It will be! Contact Justin Lindenberg for more information at justin@stewardscr.org.
Volunteers needed at our Jenner and Armstrong Visitor CenterThe Armstrong and Jenner Visitor's Centers need volunteers.  It's a fun and easy opportunity to help visitors enjoy the natural beauty of Armstrong and the Sonoma Coast.  Volunteers are needed for 3 hour shifts to provide information on the best walks/hikes, plants, animals in our parks and so much more.  We will train you on everything you need to know.  Whether you can do a weekly, monthly or occasional shift, we would love to have you join us to bring in important revenue to support Stewards programs.  Best of all, the hours quickly add up towards a day use parks pass.  Contact Kathi Moore at kathiimooree@gmail.com if you are interested.
Help remove ice plant at Bodega Head, this Sunday, February 13th from 10AM to 1PM.  Volunteers with California Native Plant Society meet every second Sunday of every month at Bodega Head to remove ice plant. Bring your gloves, clippers, knee pads, your friends... and meet new friends along the way!  Join us at the far west parking lot near the restrooms (Bodega Bay Trailhead on google maps). Text Alynn at 707-321-1748 to RSVP. Hard working teens encouraged! Only heavy rain cancels. Extra gloves, clippers and knee pads are available if needed.
