Message from the Director and Manager

Welcome to the latest edition of the Institute’s termly newsletter, which is an update and highlights some of the many excellent activities at the Institute over the past 3 months, some attracting major media attention (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/ion/news).

The last few months have focused on the UCL Strategic Plan consultation and a review of our own Institute Strategy. Following the productive discussions at our PI Science away day, townhall meetings and the Executive Committee away day at the end of 2021, we have established our key strategic priorities for the next 5 years; we have finalised our final IoN strategic plan, which is aligned with the Faculty’s strategic plan, which we are also feeding into following our annual planning and budgeting meetings. Please visit our website to read our new IoN strategic plan.

In so doing, we have also fed into the new UCL Strategy, and provided an Institute response to the Academic opportunities for targeted investment and the Evolving the UCL Grand Challenges draft papers; We encourage everyone to engage with this process by visiting the dedicated site where the draft UCL strategic papers have been uploaded. Members of the UCL community can provide feedback through the consultation site. Non-members should email consultation@ucl.ac.uk .

We continue the planning and building of our new centre of excellence for UCL Neuroscience at 256 Gray’s Inn Road. This will form part of a ‘dual hub’, supporting our existing laboratories and clinical activity at Queen Square. We have now reached the lowest excavation point, in February 2022, and hope to mark this important milestone; We aim to bury a time capsule at the lowest point in the building, which will be accessible, and will be opened in 2049. Several members of our IoN, DRI and UCL community, our UCLH partner and patients, as well as funding organisations and philanthropic partners are contributing to the time capsule content.

We have celebrated our new graduates at the UCL Graduation ceremonies, the first in person ceremonies since the start of the pandemic. Congratulations to all our Queen Square graduates, this a huge achievement especially during a pandemic. Thank you also to the staff who contributed to the graduation ceremonies and made it such an enjoyable event for our students and their guests.

We have continued to pursue our environmental sustainability and EDI strategies, which are top priorities for the Institute, and implemented a new IoN sustainable travel policy; We celebrated international women’s day by showcasing some of our formidable colleagues at the IoN across our academic, research and professional services staff communities. Please take a look at our newly revamped EDI resources pages and the new IoN Pregnancy and Parental Guidance Handbook.

As this term draws to a close, it is impossible not to reflect on the sad events taking place in Europe; We continue to provide support in the best way we can to our colleagues and students affected by the events in Ukraine- find out how you can contribute. We have also just marked the second anniversary since the first Covid pandemic lockdown; the Institute has done incredibly well over the past two years despite the pandemic, thanks to your resilience, determination, and hard work. The UCL President & Provost invites us all to join him at a special staff event on the 31st May 2022.

We hope you take the UCL Easter closure as an opportunity to have a well-deserved break, and don’t forget to Switch Off!

Michael & Hélène

Time capsule
A time capsule will be buried in the basement of the new IoN DRI building in Gray’s Inn Road which will be marked with a plaque.  There are plans to hold an internal bottoming out ceremony, details to be confirmed.

In the time capsule there will be
  • a book which will contain testimonials from the donors as well as key UCL figures.
  • images from our Early Career researchers of their work - see below
  • drawings from a local school (Christopher Hatton) who have had a competition where children submit a drawing/letter of what they hope the building and scientists will achieve in 25 years time, and also to submit an item/idea that represents 2022.

The objects to go into the capsule will be:
  • a newspaper dated the day of the internment,
  • Unused COVID-19 vaccine vial and COVID-19 sequence,
  • a plastic bag,
  • CD containing digital copies of items within the capsule,
  • building plans and flythrough videos.
There will also be an artist contribution from those artists working on the site that will be appropriate for the time capsule.

UCL Public Art Programme

The public art programme is progressing well, Annie Cattrell is developing three related permanent artworks which will be highly visible from Grays’s Inn Road. We will be taking her proposed artwork for consultation with our planning partners at Camden Borough Council shortly and hope to be able to share the idea and vision more broadly later this year.

Artist, Freya Gabie and her research into the history of the site will be realised as three artworks including some exquisite lightboxes which will animate the new building. We are pleased to announce that artist Krystle Patel has joined the team at Helene Plun-Favreau's Laboratory as artist in residence and will be working with the team for the next 12 months.

Also joining the team is curator, Laura Purseglove, who will be working with us to commission an artist to work with our local neighbours at 256 Grays Inn Road. This work will be looking at gardening through a partnership with Calthorpe Gardens with an aim to invite local communities to make use of our public spaces in and around the new buildings.

We are shortly to commence Arbor, a knowledge exchange art programme which will invite academics/researchers and students work in collaboration with artists and local communities of communities of interest to create artworks. Watch this space as the programme develops as we hope to encourage your participation.

Focus: Education

During term 2 we have been able to offer the majority of lectures in person, and have continued to live stream for students who are unable to come on campus for whatever reason. Applications for new students closes soon, and we are delighted that we can offer more scholarships for our PGT students (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ion/study/postgraduate-taught-degrees).

For this academic year (2021/22) we split our PGR students into 3 cohorts depending on when they started their PhD (September, February & April) and offer all new students a comprehensive in person programme of workshops, covering a range of useful, generic skills. We hope to increase our offering in the next year and also to include more opportunities to meet in a social setting.

The Education Team is delighted that Ms Monica Fonseca has joined the team and will be working with us until the end of June.

Mentoring at the ION: visit our new website
The QSIoN Mentoring Scheme was implemented by the Athena SWAN Committee in 2013 to support the career progression of female scientists at the IoN. Since its implementation, the scheme has been expanded to support all members of staff, irrespective of gender. For the past 9 years, this scheme has proved to be a professional and personal development experience benefiting mentees and mentors alike. To assess the impact of the programme, we surveyed the participants of the scheme in 2021. More than 90% of mentees agreed that the mentoring scheme had a positive impact on their career development, while 78% of mentors think being a mentor had a positive impact on their own career.

To improve the reach of the different mentoring offerings at the IoN, we have launched a new IoN Mentoring website, which can be visited here. To further support those taking part in one of our mentoring offerings, we have prepared supportive training materials for mentors and mentees to view on demand: specifically, the new training on Mentoring Relationships and the new IoN Mentoring Handbook.

We have also launched the Under-Represented Student Mentorship Scheme (URSM): a new mentoring offering to support Master Students from under-represented groups, who are considering applying for PhD studies in Neuroscience at UCL. This new scheme also represents an opportunity for our PhD students and junior postdocs to gain experience as mentors. For more information and to learn how you can participate in the URSM scheme, please visit our website

ION Academic Mentoring Scheme and the ION Under-Represented Student Mentorship Scheme are now accepting expressions of interest for mentors and mentees

We are now accepting expressions of interest for mentors and mentees for the IoN Academic Mentoring Scheme and for the Under-Represented Student Mentorship Scheme (URSM).
Anyone can be a mentor! PhD students and Research Assistants can mentor Masters Student. Junior Postdocs can mentor PhD students. You are never too junior to be a mentor, and you will always have relevant information to share with those who are less advanced in their career path.

The IoN Academic Mentoring Scheme is open to all clinical and non-clinical Academics, Researchers and final year PhD students at the IoN. Offerings of placements for mentees are dependent on availability from mentors and will be made on a first-come first-serve basis.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor/mentee within this scheme, please contact Bilal Malik or Ed Wild.

The IoN Under-Represented Student Mentorship Scheme aims to support Master Students from under-represented groups, who are considering applying for PhD studies in Neuroscience at UCL. If you are interested in becoming a mentor/mentee within the URSM scheme, please contact Laura Convertino or Michael Moutoussis

If you would like to join one of IoN Mentoring schemes as a mentor or mentee, please register your interest by filling out this form.

ION has a new pregnancy and parental leave handbook to support all parents-to-be and new parents
The EDI Committee Parents and Carers workgroup has worked hard to bring together a new resource to provide information and procedures to help managers and individuals who are planning on taking leave to have or adopt a child.
The new IoN Pregnancy and Parental Leave Handbook has been prepared to:

  • help those with managing responsibilities supporting their members of staff;
  • improve the experience of those taking leave before, during and following the leave period.
Some of the resources shared in this document include:
  • A summary of all rights and procedures around taking parental leave at UCL;
  • A guide to support a structured conversation between the leave-taker and the line manager to better plan for the forthcoming leave period;
  • A guide to support those responsible for conducting a risk assessment for pregnant workers and new mothers.

This document was compiled with the collaboration of several members of staff working at the IoN and at UCL. While we tried to be as thorough as possible, there will always be room for improvement and develop the content for future versions. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact IoN EDI Project Manager, Ana Faro (a.faro@ucl.ac.uk) or HR Manager, Laura Allum (l.allum@ucl.ac.uk).

ION Leadership Programme for technicians and research assistants launched on the 30th March 2022

Leadership is an enabling and transferable skill recognised in the UCL Academic Careers Framework and in the UCL Ways of Working Framework as an imperative to progress in your career at UCL.

While developing one’s leadership skills is essential to support career development at UCL, members of staff in junior roles have not been given many opportunities to leadership training due to lack of centrally provided offerings at UCL. An analysis on diversity key indicators reveals a grade gap, with women, people with reported disabilities and staff from minoritized groups being highly represented at lower grades, but less so in managerial roles. Therefore, granting training opportunities to members of staff in junior roles is an EDI imperative.

At the Institute of Neurology, we recognize the lack of opportunities for continuous personal and professional development on offer to Research Assistants or Technicians at UCL. To address this, we have decided to partner up with expert external consultant and coach Dr. Magdalena Bak-Maier of ‘Make Time Count’ to develop a bespoke pilot programme, specifically designed to support members of staff in research supporting roles.

We have started the IoN Leadership Programme with the first full day training session on the 30th of March, welcoming a cohort of 10 participants.

We are proud to say that we are the first Department in UCL offering a bespoke training for people in these professional groups. Our efforts did not go unnoticed and received interest from Faculty and elsewhere in the university. We hope we will be able to expand to other departments in UCL in 2023.

ION celebrated International Women's Day

The International Women's Day is an opportunity to reflect on how far we've come to achieve gender equity in our society - but also to consider on how far we still need to go. There have been significant improvements in gender equity in UK Higher Education Institutions in the past decades - much thank to the engagement with the Athena Swan charter, guiding departments and institutions to address gendered inequalities in Academia. However, there is still a lot of work to be done - within our community and beyond.

Reflecting upon our progress, Laura Allum, IoN HR Manager and IoN Athena Swan co-Lead said: "Today we celebrate those women in ION that are so visible in both clinical and non-clinical research but recognise that we still need to do more to ensure representation and promotion of BAME women in science".

Gabriele Lignani, Principal Research Fellow at the Dep. Clinical and Experimental Epilepsy and IoN Athena Swan co-Lead furthered: "we still need to promote day by day actions to ensure a definitive cultural change to obtain gender equality at every career stage in STEM and in Higher Education Institutions."

Professor Helene Plun-Favreau, IoN Deputy Director for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, added "I am delighted to see some of our colleagues celebrated for IWD. At the IoN we are committed to increasing the representation of women and other under-represented categories at ION, in order to improve academic and clinical excellence".

To celebrate International Women's Day (8 March), we interviewed 7 members of our community who lead by example of commitment, kindness and work ethic and help make IoN an inspiring workplace. We took this opportunity to learn more about what drives them, who are their female role models and what advise they would give to their younger selves. The impact of their actions and work, both locally and more widely, is truly inspiring.

UKRI open access policy

The new UKRI open access policy applies to peer-reviewed research articles, including reviews and conference papers, submitted from 1 April 2022. The recording and slides from the Open Access Team’s recent UCL-wide briefings on the policy are now available. We’encourage all UKRI-funded PIs, and anyone involved in submitting UKRI-funded articles, to take a look at them

Research Publications Service videos

UCL have launched some new webpages and videos to support authors with using UCL’s Research Publications Service.  It would be helpful if departments could incorporate them into induction materials for new members of staff. The videos explain how to get started with using RPS, and how to claim and upload publications in order to comply with the REF open access policy.
