NEW PUBLICATION
PUTS RESEARCH
IN THE NEWS!

by Jynene Black, Reporting & Outreach Coordinator
Dr. Konrad Meister, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, Dept of Arts and Sciences-Natural Sciences at University of Alaska Southeast, had his research featured in a January 26, 2022 press release entitled, "Antifreeze Proteins to the Rescue! Natural Cryoprotectants enable improved Cold-Storage of Red Blood Cells." The press release is based on a paper, also published on January 26th, "Ice Recrystallization Inhibition is Insufficient to Explain Cryopreservation Abilities of Antifreeze Proteins."

Dr. Meister's research interests include cold-adaptation, antifreeze proteins, and biological ice nucleation. He hailed from Germany and received his BS, MS, and PhD from Ruhr-University Bochum. He spent four years at AMOLF, Amsterdam, the Netherlands, studying antifreeze proteins.
NEW ARTICLE HIGHLIGHTS PATHOGENOMICS TOOLKIT
by Jynene Black, Reporting & Outreach Coordinator
Check out the latest COVID paper co-authored by Dr. Eric Bortz, UAA, and Matthew Redlinger, a current master’s degree student in Dr. Bortz's lab.  A new article, Tracking SARS-COV-2 Variants Using Nanopore Sequencing in Ukraine in Summer 2021, reports local sequencing of 24 SARS-CoV-2 genomes from patient samples in Kyiv, Ukraine.  The Alaska INBRE "Pathogenomics Toolkit" provided part of the bioinformatics support.   You can find the article here

What is a Pathogenomics Toolkit?  Great question!  In 2019 the UAA/Bortz lab developed a toolbox of accessible laboratory methods for pathogen detection and genomic sequencing.  This toolbox had three components, genome sequencing protocols, bioinformatics, and workspace.  Interested in this shared resource?  Contact Eric Bortz at ebortz@alaska.edu .

2022 ALASKA INDIGENOUS RESEARCH PROGRAM BY ANTHC & APU - Alaska Native and American Indian people have historically been underrepresented among researchers and health scientists. There is a need for Western-trained researchers to be culturally aware, respectful and responsive in meeting the diverse health needs of Indigenous communities. The goal of Alaska Indigenous Research Program is to increase th health research capacity of Alaska Native/American Indian people and communities by providing Indigenous-centered, cross-cultural research education and internships.
  • Week One - Advanced Research - May 2-6 - Designed for experienced researchers and health professionals
  • Week Two - Research Ethics - May 9-13 - Designed for all levels of research experience
  • Week Three - Introductory Research - May 16-20 - Designed for those interested in health research
