This year we have created small group settings to help strengthen every child’s love for reading and provide each child with the support he/she needs in order to become a strong, independent, and confident reader.  We began a 30 minute Reading Enrichment & Intervention Block for students in grades K-5.  Each day, students participate in 60-90 minutes of regular Language Arts instruction in their classrooms but then also have thirty extra minutes to meet in small groups for additional Reading instruction.  In grades K-3, we call this “S.T.A.R. Time” (Sit together and read) and in grades 4 & 5, it is called “Book Clubs.”  Numerous adults in our building collaborate to make this intervention possible: Mrs. Dukes, Mrs. Kowalski, Mrs. Ridenour, Mrs. Knapp, Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Kreager, Mrs. Gutierrez, and Mrs. Groves, as well as all of our K-5 teachers and aides.  It is a team effort that has each student’s individual academic growth in mind.
We were honored to be one of only a few local schools to receive an invitation by the Klau Center at the University of Notre Dame to attend The First Brave Step: A Conversation with Ruby Bridges at Debartolo Performing Arts Center.  There, our students listened to Ruby Bridges share her story of integrating Louisiana schools as a six-year-old, surrounded by federal marshals.  As an important figure in the civil rights movement, then and now, she spoke of the difficulty and beauty involved in embracing diversity and took particular care to challenge our students to do the same.
