JET Alumni Interviews with the Japan Society Boston
"It took me a few months to get used to Kansai-ben, but I did end up picking it up from my students, who used it very often during class. My favorite words were “mettcha” (very), “nandeyanen” (Why / That’s crazy), “kamahen” (It doesn’t matter), and “shiran” (I don’t know). The teachers I worked with were surprised when I started using Kansai-ben in school!"
"I was placed in the gorgeous, rural town of Hokuto, Yamanashi from 2009-2014. Located in the very north of Yamanashi, Hokuto is bordered by Nagano prefecture and is nestled within the Yatsugatake mountain range. So, in addition to having a very clear view of Mt. Fuji, Hokuto has stunning views of Yatsugatake as well. There are some Japanese celebrities who are known or rumored to have second homes in Hokuto due to the fantastic scenery in relative proximity to Tokyo. Despite Hokuto being rural, it is surprisingly diverse and cosmopolitan as it is home to Suntory's Hakushu distillery, many delicious restaurants, and the world's only museum dedicated to the works of Keith Haring."
"Japan honestly changed my life. It changed my career trajectory, the way I live and engage with other humans, and has had such an immense impact on my worldview. So much so, that I relocated to the US for graduate studies, where I focused on International Education and Training. Since completing my studies, I have been quite blessed to work with an organization that allows me to facilitate programs focused on assisting universities to incorporate Japanese and initiatives into their academic programs and student life. Through my work and in my personal life, I have become an advocate for international learning experiences."
These alumni interviews are part of a partnership between the Japan Society Boston (JSB) and USJETAA in which JET alumni contribute short interviews about their experiences in Japan in each prefecture. To read past interviews, please visit our website.

Recording: Go for Broke! – The Nisei Soldier Legacy of World War II
JETAA Florida held an important discussion on the social justice legacy of the Japanese American (“Nisei”) soldiers of the 100th/442nd RCT who overcame poverty and prejudice to become and continues to be the most decorated outfit in US military history for its size and length of service. The discussion featured Dr. Lynn Heirakuji, President and Board Member of the Nisei Veterans Legacy, whose father was a member of the 442nd RCT, who provided a general historical background on the Nisei Soldier story with a focus on the Hawaii experience. Commentary from panelists Diane Hirabayashi Carter, Collections Assistant at the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens, and Dr. Mitzi Uehara Carter, Assistant Teaching Professor of Anthropology, East Asian Studies, and the African and Africa Diaspora Program at Florida International University added insight on the Nisei legacy in the Florida/mainland context and its significance to present-day social justice movements, particularly with regard to the rise in Anti-Asian sentiment in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic. Event was sponsored by the USJETAA and Sasakawa USA Chapter Grant Program.

March 2022 Japanese Reading Group (Virtual)
REGISTER
6:00 PM EST / 5:00 PM CST / 4:00 PM MST / 3:00 PM PST/ 2:00 PM AST / 1:00 PM HST
The goal of the USJETAA Japanese Reading Group is to help advanced beginner and intermediate level students improve their reading skills. Each month we will look at a short reading from Aozora Bunko, a repository of public domain literature. Participants should attempt to do the reading on their own and come to the meeting with any questions. We will spend the meeting each month reading the assignment sentence by sentence to understand how the Japanese is working.
This month's meeting will be on the first Friday of the month.
March reading:
https://www.aozora.gr.jp/cards/000234/files/50417_47816.html
This month we're reading "Waterfalls" by Imai Kuniko. She's a novelist, poet, and literary scholar from Nagano prefecture. The reading uses the older kana orthography, so small つ will appear as big つ and え will sometimes be written as へ. The reading ends with a challenging poem. Let's puzzle through this one together!
