1000 Books Before Kindergarten

Introducing a new free early literacy program which encourages you to read 1,000 books with your child before he or she begins kindergarten!

The program entails reading any book to your newborn, infant and/or toddler before they start kindergarten.  It may sound hard to do, but it really is not! If you read just one book a night together, you will have read 365 books in a year!  That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years!  There are no restrictions as to which book you read or how many times you read it!  It can include books read to your child by a teacher, a sibling, or during Story Time.
Each experience counts as a book read!

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Any child from birth until he or she enters kindergarten, usually around the age of five.
More than one young family member in this age range may participate at the same time!

HOW TO GET STARTED!
Check online for all the fun details and register HERE.

BOOK GOALS
Collect Brag Tags along your way to the 1000 Book Goal. When you reach your goal, come celebrate at the library, collect your last Brag Tag and receive your certificate. As a lasting honor, a library book from our collection will be dedicated to your child highlighting their achievement!

The 2021-2022
Great Michigan Read
The book tells the story of 25-year-old Annie Clements who stood up for miners and their families during the 1913 copper strikes.

“This fictionalized account of the very real and dangerous conditions Upper Peninsula copper miners faced and Annie Clements’ willingness to fight for a better life for them and their families will have readers cheering as Big Annie takes on the company owners in one of the first tests of the American labor movement,” said Shelly Hendrick Kasprzycki, Michigan Humanities president and CEO. “At a time when women were expected to keep house and raise children, Annie Clements’ decision to become a leader and take a stand is a story of courage. She’s a wonderful example of the strong and principled women who have made history in Michigan and across the country, and it’s especially important to share her story during Women’s History Month.”

The Great Michigan Read aims to connect Michigan residents by deepening reader’s understanding of the state, society and humanity. The Great Michigan Read is selected every two years by a statewide panel of teachers, librarians, community leaders and book lovers.

The 2021-2022 Great Michigan Read is supported by national, statewide and local partners, including the National Endowment for the HumanitiesThe Meijer Foundation, and Martin Waymire.

Russell is the award-winning author of seven bestselling novels, including the science fiction classics The Sparrow and Children of God; the World War II thriller, A Thread of Grace; and a political romance set in 1921 Cairo called Dreamers of the Day. With her novels Doc and Epitaph, Russell has redefined two towering figures of the American West: the lawman Wyatt Earp and the dental surgeon Doc Holliday. She holds a Ph.D. in biological anthropology from the University of Michigan and taught anatomy at the Case Western Reserve University School of Dentistry. She lives in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Women of the Copper Country
by Mary Doria Russell
read by Cassandra Campbell

The Great Michigan Read is a program brought to us by Michigan Humanities to connect communities throughout Michigan in one common conversation. The book title for the 2021/2022 season is “The Women of the Copper Country.” A better title could not have been chosen to fulfill their vision statement of “a more thoughtful, connected, engaged and informed Michigan.”

This is the story of Annie Clemenc (Clements) who became the spokeswoman of the 1913 miners’ strike in Calumet. Known as Big Annie due to her height of over 6 feet, she led the Women’s Auxiliary every day for 9 months down Main Street proudly carrying an enormous flag. Compared to Joan of Arc, she tirelessly fought for improvements in living standards and work safety. Together with women and children, she supported the miners in seeking a shorter work day and higher wages.

Mary Doria Russell is known for her meticulous research for her historical novels. Here she outdid herself. As I was more and more pulled into the story of Annie Clemenc and the life of the miners, I began to look up further information about this courageous immigrant. I was more than once astonished to come across a photograph I thought I had seen before. Then I noticed the clever way in which Dr. Russell incorporated actual historical photographs into her story line so graphically as if she had included a copy of the actual picture. Dr. Russell’s prose brings to life the extreme living conditions the miners’ families had to contend with in addition to the constant fear that the bread winner will either return from the mine maimed or not at all.

The book includes a conversation with the author in which she states that the novelist’s job is “to combine imagination and empathy with research.” I can only say, a job well done! What makes a historical novel truly stand out is when the reader is so pulled into it that he/she wants to learn more about the time period and the historical events in it.

Cassandra Campbell lends her vocal talent to the author’s vivid prose thus lifting the characters right out of the pages. She delivers a very empathetic narration in the beginning of the book when the miners’ living and work conditions are described. She then changes her tone completely to give the mine owner, James MacNaughton, the required hard and unrelenting edge. With her great aptitude for accents, she adds color to the different nationalities of the immigrants and rounds out the picture the author is creating.

TDL will have two book club sessions on this book; the first one on March 16, 2022 at 3 pm at the library and the second one on March 21, 2022 at 7 pm at Salsaria’s Restaurant.

I cannot wait to discuss this book and thus fulfill the Michigan Humanities Mission of "bringing people together through stories, histories, cultures and conversations."

TDL owns this title in regular print and on audio.

Fannie Davis:
Part Bookie, Banker & Mother
on Zoom
(Registration Required)
7:00 PM - 8:00 PM

During this virtual presentation, Michigan Notable author Bridgett M. Davis will discuss her award-winning memoir, World According to Fannie Davis: My Mother’s Life in the Detroit Numbers.

In 1958, the very same year that an unknown songwriter named Berry Gordy borrowed $800 to found Motown Records, a pretty young mother from Nashville, Tennessee, borrowed $100 from her brother to run a numbers racket out of her tattered apartment on Delaware Street, in one of Detroit's worst sections. That woman was Fannie Davis, Bridgett M. Davis's mother.

A daughter's moving homage to an extraordinary parent, The World According to Fannie Davis is also the suspenseful, unforgettable story about the lengths to which a mother will go to "make a way out of no way" to provide a prosperous life for her family -- and how those sacrifices resonate over time. Part bookie, part banker, mother, wife, granddaughter of slaves, Fannie Davis became more than a numbers runner: she was a kind of Ulysses, guiding both her husbands, five children and a grandson through the decimation of a once-proud city.

Bridgett M. Davis is the author of the memoir, The World According To Fannie Davis: My Mother’s Life in the Detroit Numbers, a New York Times Editors’ Choice, a 2020 Michigan Notable Book, and named a Best Book of 2019 by Kirkus Reviews, BuzzFeed, NBC News and Parade Magazine. She is writing the screenplay for the film adaptation of the book, which will be produced by Plan B Entertainment and released by Searchlight Pictures.

She is author of two novels, Into the Go-Slownamed a Best Book of 2014 by The San Francisco Chronicle, and Shifting Through Neutral, shortlisted for the Zora Neale Hurston/Richard Wright Legacy Award. Davis is also writer/director of the award-winning feature film Naked Acts, now part of the permanent collection at Indiana University’s distinguished Black Film Archive.

Davis is a Professor in the Department of Journalism and the Writing Professions at Baruch College and the CUNY Graduate Center, where she teaches creative, narrative and film writing.

Her essays have appeared most recently in The New York Times, The Millions, Real Simple, the LA Times and O, the Oprah Magazine. A graduate of Spelman College and Columbia University's Graduate School of Journalism, she lives in Brooklyn with her family.

This special virtual event is made possible through the generosity of the Friends of Tecumseh District Library.

This special event will also be streamed on Facebook Live, which can be viewed from the library’s Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/Tecumseh-District-Library-192148050127/.
