BOARDING NEWSLETTER

Kia Ora Whānau and welcome back to our first Boarding Newsletter for the 2022. We are super excited to see the boys return to the Boarding House for what will be another amazing year. We also welcome with open arms, the new Year 9 Boarders to the school. We cannot wait to see how far these boys will all grow this year and to see how much they will all achieve.
Message from Dai Williams:

Last Sunday and Monday saw the new Year 9 boarders arrive for their retreat. The boys were joined by 6 of our Year 13 Leaders. The older boys did a great job  at helping and directing the new boys and strong connections were formed between the Year 13’s and Year 9 boys. The weather was superb and the boys had a marvellous 2 days getting to know each other and enjoying a range of excellent activities. The Year 9’s have begun confidently and it has been good to get them organised into good routines both at night and in the mornings in preparation for School. The boys are set to enjoy time at home over the long Waitangi weekend but can be pleased with the good routines they have already established.

Boys across other year levels came back in a staggered start but everybody seems to have settled well and a number of new boys in years 11-13, have also started in an assured manner. We have eight new staff who have started with us for 2022 and they too have made strong, positive beginnings this week and have enjoyed getting to know the boys.

This first full week back has been interesting, operating the hostel in the Red traffic light Covid setting. It will take a period of adjustment for boys and staff, as we work with a number of new changes we have had to adopt. Overall, the boys have tried their best to embrace these changes. We are seeking further Ministry clarification over the possible use of the gym and weights room for the boarders after school/evenings and hope to have an answer to this by Monday.

All the changes and precautions we have taken, have been made after receiving the most up to date and comprehensive advice, to ensure our boarding community stay safe but we are keen to see if we can make some sensible adjustments as we move forward. I will be in touch with any new updates.

Next week is looking like an action-packed shortened week with Sports day on Thursday and the rescheduled swimming sports set to take place next Friday. We hope you have a wonderful Waitangi weekend with your boys and look forward to restarting with everybody back ready for Tuesday.

Best wishes, Dai and the boarding team
