Rachel Rogers Correspondence

Letter from the Editor.

You know what never gets old? Groundhog Day. You know what never gets old? Groundhog Day.

Groundhogs are so underrated and it's wonderful that one groundhog gets to live out its dream as a weather reporter. I wanted to be a weather reporter for a little bit. Mostly because of the green screen and talking about rain. But now I have a green screen in my room so I guess I'm already living out my wildest hopes and fantasies.

I ate some Brussel Sprouts this week.

Oh, last Friday when I said I was going to have the best Friday of my life, I did. I saw a coyote running down the middle of my street from the direction of my house while I was driving home. Another one of Jamaica the Cats friends? Probably.

I am currently in the middle of a situation with Goodreads. I signed up for Goodreads last week and a few days later discovered my book, Tweet, is already on the site (with a four-star review)! I found a way to claim the author page for my book and submitted my application only to have it rejected. The feeling of rejection overwhelmed me for 30 seconds this morning before I reapplied with more details and after adding a profile picture to my Goodreads account. We will all be waiting in suspense together. Your support during this time is invaluable.

Full disclosure, I'm willing to take this to court.

The good news is monarch butterflies are pulling off a stunning population rebound in the Portland area and Mike's Drive In is adding their first west side location. Right by my house. God moves in mysterious ways.

Speaking of food and population increases, we have a mouse in the office! Wow! You never think it will happen to you until it does. The mouse got into my coworker's file cabinet and made its way into her Blue Diamond unsalted almonds. We discovered the evidence Monday morning and found a dead mouse yesterday. RIP.

Another RIP to my parsley "plant." My boss gave us all parsley seeds and a small planter for Christmas. Mine is the only one that didn't take off. I've been unwilling to admit defeat until today. So yeah, I guess I'm working through some things.

I also am doing a free trial of Tidal. You may never see me again, Spotify.

I forgot to mention another dimension of my wonderful Friday last week. To preface, my favorite comedian's podcast got picked up by a podcast network. That's her great news. My great news is that when they had her make a one-minute podcast trailer, she read one review of her podcast and it was my review of the podcast.

If there's two things I love most it's having my writing read by strangers and getting to italicize words when I'm typing.

Lastly, I got my haircut (I didn't even wait a year between cuts like normal) and I saw a rainbow.

Alright now. Stay safe and stay humble.

Please.
Take My Breath Away?
Inhale. Exhale. Wasn't it nice to take such a classic gulp of air? But did you know some people aren't breathing that way? That's right! Some people use the circular breathing technique so they don't have to take a big breath when they are in the middle of a magical clarinet solo. Instead of normal breathing, they store air in their cheeks like squirrels. Are squirrels also doing circular breathing? Really makes you think.

REVIEWS

Good Talk
I read my first graphic novel! I read Good Talk by Mira Jacob. Multnomah County Library chose this book as their Everybody Reads 2022 pick. This is a memoir that teeters between the author's present day, where she finds herself answering a myriad of questions from her six-year-old, and her experiences from her childhood through her early adulthood. Mira Jacob explores how she came to know herself, her skills, her worth, her identity, her race, and her heritage. This story is expertly executed in both writing and graphics and is well worth the read! I even teared up at the end.
Switched on Pop
Secret's out! I like pop music. And you know who else does? Composer Charlie Harding and Musicologist Nate Sloan, co-hosts of Switched on Pop. Switched on Pop is a podcast where the hosts break down how artists craft pop music and the historical roots of contemporary musical devices. Sometimes they even interview the music-makers themselves. I just listened to an episode on the creation of Spycraft music for James Bond movies which was fascinating. This is a fun podcast that you may find yourself enjoying more than you had originally anticipated.
The Review Section of My Newsletter
I've been reviewing things ever since I started this newsletter. But do I think the reviews in my newsletter are good? Debatable. There are times I have a firm opinion and the right words to get the point across and other times I think I just use it as a way to brag about what I'm doing/reading/watching/eating. Definitely room for improvement but I wouldn't skip over it when reading the newsletter.
