TEAM RECTOR'S MESSAGE

Last month, we launched our Year of Living Generously here in Ashford Town Parish. We started out by focusing on God’s generous gift to us in Jesus Christ. The Gospel reading for this Sunday tells how Jesus provided a miraculous sign of God’s abundant generosity to Peter and his friends, and how they responded to that.

Where have you seen signs of God’s generous love? How have you responded? What difference has it made in your life?

Like Peter and his friends, we have a story to share, a story about Jesus and what he has done for us. The title for our parish Lent course this year is ‘Sharing our Story’, and we’ll be looking at the story of salvation we find in the bible, and the story of our own unique lives, and how they get woven together as we follow the way of Christ.

Living generously means being free to share with others what we have been given. I hope that ‘Sharing our Story’ can help us to do that.

We plan to offer the course during the daytime at a central location, and to make material available for groups meeting in the evening in people’s homes. If you’d like to take part and you’re not currently part of a home group, do please let the parish office know – that will help our planning. Look out for more information in the coming weeks.

'PUTTING THE PUFF BACK INTO THE PIPES'

A review of Jane Wisely's concert at St. Mary’s Ashford
on Sunday 16 January. By Bryan Gipps.

In the first Sunday concert, aiming to raise money and further public awareness of the newly initiated fund, desperately needed to restore the instruments in St. Mary’s Parish Church Ashford, pianist, Jane Wisely, showed us her remarkable talent and musical ability, with four works from the ‘classical’ repertoire, starting with one of Beethoven’s most popular Sonatas known as “Pathetique”.

From the opening C minor chord right through to the final showy descending flourish, Jane was able to demonstrate her ability to create the power, cantabilie (song like) and almost reckless demands needed within this one piece.

The next works, three of Schubert’s ‘Impromptus’, again showed Jane’s ability to effetely play demanding works and give all three the ‘song’ like quality demanded by much of Schubert’s piano music. In the following piece, Jane cleverly linked the ‘classical’ with the late ‘romantic’ in Liszt’s arrangement of Schubert’s ‘Ave Maria’. It would be interesting to know what Schubert would have thought of this ‘arrangement’ – possibly something unprintable? For we are lead from the celestial image of the virgin Mary, to the almost crazy gymnasts demanded by Liszt on the performer, and this something Jane appeared to do with ease and humours charm.

After well deserved applause, Jane transported us into the twentieth century with an ‘encore’ by ‘Shostakovich’  - a little mysterious & rather playful prelude, which kept us guessing as to how the music would finally end!

Thanks to Jane, her page turner, and the free refreshments served beforehand, a very enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon in the impressive nave of our lovely Parish Church here in Ashford.

The next concert in this series is on Sunday 20 February, with Helen Bailey, Soprano, and James Clements, Baritone. Doors open at 3.00pm.

PRAY TOGETHER

For Parish and Diocese:

Almighty God, just as the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are your ways higher than our ways and your thoughts than our thoughts. Transform our hearts and draw us into your love;
free us from the selfish desire of worldly gain
and help us to reimagine how we use the gifts we have
that we may give of ourselves and our possessions
to accomplish all that you desire
and achieve the purpose for which you gave them. Amen
