JANUARY NEWSLETTER

Alan Harkness

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of beloved Alan Harkness after a tragic fight with cancer. Alan arrived in Zambia in the late 90s and decided to make it home after falling in love with the culture and beauty of the country.

Alan became one of the big drivers behind the development of Zambian tourism. He also donated his time and expertise to CLZ for over 12 years as the CLZ Board Treasurer—all on a voluntary basis. In 2021, Alan was awarded CLZ honorary life membership to acknowledge his dedication to conservation.

Alan believed in the work of CLZ and his contribution was invaluable. Our heartfelt condolences go out to his loved ones. May he rest in peace.

Elephant Rescue

This January, DNPW and CLZ responded swiftly to a local tour guide's report of an elephant that was shot in the leg by poachers. The team did not know if they would be able to locate the elephant or if a rescue attempt would be possible.

Thankfully, the DNPW vet rushed to the valley and DNPW teams found the injured animal. The operation was a huge success with the bullet wound treated and the elephant saved. Thank you to vet, Dr Innocent Billy N'gombwa, for quickly responding and to Olsen Animal Trust for funding this mission.

Women's Leadership and Empowerment

This January, CLZ's Environmental Education Manager, Besa Kaoma, successfully completed a Women’s Leadership and Empowerment Training of Trainers hosted by USAID Integrated Land and Resource Governance. The focus of this training was to build the capacity for women to effectively participate in community natural resource management.  This will help Besa deliver leadership skills training to women in communities around the Lower Zambezi and monitor the impact of the training.

2021  Elephant Poaching

CLZ is disheartened to report that there was a notable rise in the number of elephants poached in 2021 with 17 elephants killed within the park and GMAs—marking the highest number since 2018. Remains were most often discovered in remote areas during aerial patrols and responded to by teams on the ground. A notable difference is that ivory was frequently left behind and only meat was taken—perhaps an indicator of the loss of jobs and income from COVID-19.

Kangaluwi Copper Mine

The Save Zambezi Safe Zambezi coalition, which includes CLZ, several Civil Society Organisations, traditional leaders, artists, safari operators and other stakeholders, has called on President Hakainde Hichilema to honour the promise he made to protect the Lower Zambezi National Park, and halt the controversial open-pit copper mine planned in the heart of the area.

The Lower Zambezi National Park is an integral part of the wider Zambezi basin, which is the most significant shared resource that contributes to the economic, environmental and social development of Southern Africa. Sustainable management of this resource is critical to securing the futures of over 250 million people in the broader region that depend on it.

As an organisation CLZ recognises the urgent need for alternative, sustainable job creation in the area in order to uplift the livelihoods of the communities however, we are concerned by the government's decision to allow the mine to go ahead as we fear the consequences will be grave. The mine will have a potentially devastating impact on people, water, the land and the environment. Please join the movement to stop the mine and sign the petition today
